The Padres-Mariners series has been informally known for years as the "Vedder Cup" in honor of the singer, who moved from San Diego to Seattle to start Pearl Jam in the 1990s.
The two teams meet this season in Seattle from May 16-18 and in San Diego from Aug. 25-27.
The series features two themed games on May 17 in San Diego and Aug. 27 in Seattle.
As part of the new rivalry series, the Mariners and Padres will make annual donations to EB Research Partnership, co-founded by Eddie and Jill Vedder to support research funding for epidermolysis bullosa (EB).
According to an MLB press release, the Vedder Cup trophy will feature one of Vedder's guitars. The trophy will be unveiled ahead of May 16.
In case the Padres and Mariners split the six-game season series, the Vedder Cup will be determined by an initial tiebreaker of run differential, according to MLB.
Should the two teams each win three games with the same run differential, the Vedder Cup winner will come down to which team recorded the highest exit velocity on a hit, per MLB.
Last season the Mariners won the season series with the Padres 3-1, outscoring their interleague rivals by a total of 18-12 runs.
The Mariners hold an overall record of 68-63 against the Padres, including a 33-38 mark at home and a 35-35 record on the road. The two clubs have never met in the postseason.
