Inside Walker Buehler's Coffee Prank on Red Sox Prospects Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer
Walker Buehler may be new to the Boston Red Sox, but that didn't stop him from carrying on a time-honored tradition in sports of pranking the young guys.
Per The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey, Buehler used a discussion with top prospect Roman Anthony about coffee as an opportunity to make him buy beverages the next day for everyone on the team in spring training.
Anthony, who said he initially "thought it was a joke," did recruit fellow prospect Marcelo Mayer to help him handle what turned out to be a Starbucks order with 76 different drinks.
Mayer told McCaffrey he did plan ahead by visiting the location they would be visiting the night before, then asking to speak with the manager to give a heads up about what would be coming the next morning.
"I’m like, 'You better bring your A squad tomorrow morning at 5 a.m. because we’re ordering 76 coffees,'" Mayer said. "They weren’t just all black coffees, everyone had a separate order."
Fellow Red Sox minor leaguer Max Ferguson was also called into action because his SUV was used to transport the beverages back to the team's spring training site.
It turned out to be even more complicated than just ordering the drinks because Anthony "had to read off each individual order and pay one at a time" in order to make sure they could differentiate what everyone ordered.
As a result of Anthony paying for each order individually, McCaffrey noted the credit card he was using got declined due to suspicion of fraud, so Mayer had to step in and start paying.
The whole ordeal took about an hour to complete and resulted in a bill over $600, not including what McCaffrey described as a "hefty cash tip" for the Starbucks crew.
In keeping with the spirit of baseball, it wasn't a perfect game for Anthony and Mayer. Garrett Crochet wound up getting an iced coffee, instead of the hot coffee he wanted.
"I thought it was great, and they nailed it minus one coffee, so we may have to get them to do it again to get Crochet’s right," Alex Bregman jokingly told McCaffrey.
Mass Starbucks orders seem to be a favorite prank that veteran big leaguers use on young players and prospects. Back in 2015, the St. Louis Cardinals sent their three rookie pitchers to the coffee chain to pick up drinks for the team prior to a game against the Chicago Cubs.
The Cardinals' coffee run was much less extreme than this one since it occurred during the season, when there are fewer players on the roster. Pictures from the journey showed them carrying a total of 13 drinks.
This could be the last time that Anthony, the No. 2 overall prospect in MLB entering this season, and Mayer (No. 12) are used as the victims of a veteran prank. Both players are likely to start the season at Triple-A, with a chance to be playing in Boston very soon if they continue to tear it up in the minors.
Buehler joined the Red Sox on a one-year contract in free agency. The 30-year-old spent his entire career up to this point with the Los Angeles Dodgers after being selected in the first round of the 2015 draft.
