NFL Rumors: Russell Wilson, Steelers Contract Possible If Aaron Rodgers Pursuit Fails

Andrew PetersMar 11, 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers missed out on their reported preference between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson as Fields signed with the New York Jets, but Wilson could still be welcome in Pittsburgh.

Per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Gerry Dulac, Wilson could re-sign with Pittsburgh if the current contract talks between the Steelers and Aaron Rodgers don't work out.

Though Wilson isn't putting up the same numbers he once did, he had a solid year in 2024, throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 games on his way to his first Pro Bowl bid since 2021. He also helped the Steelers reach the playoffs, where they fell to the Baltimore Ravens 28-14 in the wild-card round.

Wilson indicated after the season that he wanted to be back in Pittsburgh in 2025.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers organization, man. It's been such a blessing to be here," Wilson told reporters after losing in the wild-card round. "The guys that we have, the organization, it's truly first class. We love the city, obviously, and what it means, not just to me and Ciara and our family, but just also the National Football League.

"Obviously, I hope I'm here, and everything else. I trust God, whatever that is."

Rodgers, who is five years older than Wilson, threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year as New York went 5-12. The four-time MVP had a 90.5 passer rating, which was the lowest of his career in terms of his healthy seasons.

Should the Steelers sign the veteran, they'll likely do so with the expectation that he won't be on the roster more than a season or two and they'll likely have to begin preparations for their next quarterback.

Whether Rodgers decides to head to Pittsburgh or elsewhere, it might be a lengthy decision process, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
