Schefter: Aaron Rodgers' Decision 'Could Be A Little While' amid Steelers, Giants Buzz
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers' decision on his next NFL home "could be a little while," per ESPN's Adam Schefter on SportsCenter Tuesday.
"He does things on his schedule, when he's ready," Schefter said. "And my understanding is this could be a little while. Now I don't know if a little while is a day or a week, but my understanding is this could be a little while before he makes a decision about what he wants."
Earlier Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on the Pat McAfee Show that Rodgers is choosing between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.
The 41-year-old Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, completed 63.0 percent of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year for the New York Jets.
The Jets met with Rodgers in February and informed him of their decision to part ways as the team entered a new era with general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn.
He's still a member of the Jets right now, but ESPN's Rich Cimini previously reported that the team was likely to carry him on the roster until March 12, when they could designate him as a post-June 1 cut and more easily absorb remaining cap chargers.
So Rodgers is moving on, with Pittsburgh or the Giants the apparent top two options.
Based on Schefter's report, we may not see an imminent decision, but the Steelers might have the upper hand. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing "a source with knowledge of the situation," reported that "the Steelers and Rodgers could have an agreement in place as soon as Tuesday."
Pittsburgh is in the market for a new quarterback. The Steelers are clearly looking to move on from Russell Wilson, and they've already done so with Justin Fields, who since agreed to a $40 million deal with the New York Jets. Pittsburgh also just traded a second-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver D.K. Metcalf, who agreed to a five-year, $150 million deal.
So the Steelers, coming off a 10-7 season that resulted in a playoff berth, desperately need to find a quarterback to take advantage of the new talent aboard and improve an offense that just finished a so-so 16th in scoring.
Meanwhile, the Giants desperately need an answer at quarterback, too, after parting ways with Daniel Jones during the 2024 midseason. They're coming off a 3-14 season and have tried to answer some questions via free agency, notably shoring up the secondary with cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevon Holland.
But the Giants' offense has been one of the worst in football over the past two years. So their desperation for a veteran is understandable, but Big Blue could also just find an answer in the draft. New York has the No. 3 overall pick and could stand pat to take a quarterback or perhaps trade up to No. 1 to get its top choice.
In the interim, the waiting game continues as Pittsburgh and New York awaits Rodgers' decision. It appears one team will get its top choice of the moment, while the other is forced to go back to the drawing board.
