Just under three hours after the card went up for auction on Thursday, bidding eclipsed $220,000, according to Burrows. It quickly surpassed the record for any Skenes card, with the previous mark of $123,220 used to acquire a 2023 Bowman Draft Chrome Prospects Autographs Superfractor autographed card in a public sale.
The one-of-one card currently up for auction features a patch that the 22-year-old wore on his uniform during his MLB debut in 2024.
It was part of the 2024 Chrome Update release. Topps announced that it was eventually pulled by an 11-year-old collector on Jan. 21.
When the card was released, the Pirates offered a variety of rewards to obtain it. Offers included two season tickets behind home plate for 30 years, a meet-and-greet with Skenes and two autographed jerseys from the pitcher.
The offer ultimately wasn't accepted but Skenes and his girlfriend, LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne, later posed with the card in person.
Fanatics Collect also announced that proceeds from the card will be directly donated to Los Angeles wildfire relief funds.
The right-hander is coming off a stellar rookie season in 2024, finishing with an 11-3 record in 23 starts to go along with a 1.96 ERA and 0.947 WHIP. Skenes struck out 170 batters in 133 innings of work.
Bids on the card should continue to rise as the auction runs through March 20 at 10 p.m. ET.
