NBA Insider: 'Unlikely' a Team Trades for Kevin Durant as 1-Year Rental in Free Agency

Scott PolacekMar 6, 2025

The Phoenix Suns kept Kevin Durant through February's trade deadline, but that doesn't mean the speculation about his future stopped.

ESPN's Bobby Marks reported Thursday that "two factors will play a role if a trade materializes" during the upcoming offseason with the first one being whether the future Hall of Famer is willing to sign a two-year, $122 million contract extension with the team that lands him in a deal.

That is important because Marks explained "it is unlikely a team trades draft capital and players for a one-year rental" even if that rental is an all-time great in Durant.

The other factor is whether the team trading for him is a contender seeing how Durant would surely like to compete for a third championship ring.

"I want my career to end on my terms, that's the only thing,"" Durant said during an appearance on The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis last month. "That's the only thing I'm worried about. 'Cause I see a lot of dudes that don't get that opportunity, so I want to keep putting in that work to make that choice on my own."

Marks' report comes after ESPN's Shams Charania reported the Suns and Durant will likely "work together on any potential trade to a contender" this offseason if there is going to be a move.

The 15-time All-Star was included in a number of trade rumors leading up to the deadline, although he made it clear he didn't want to return to the Golden State Warriors in a deal. Golden State shifted its focus and eventually ended up with Jimmy Butler.

That Durant was even talked about as a trade candidate underscores how disappointing this season has been for the Suns.

Despite a trio of Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, they are 29-33 and 2.5 games back of the final spot in the Western Conference play-in tournament. They look nothing like a championship contender, which could inspire Durant to look elsewhere this offseason.

If he does, it seems like it won't only be for one year given the reported desire from other teams to make sure he is more than just a rental.
