The Rock didn't take kindly to that, and neither did John Cena, who made an astonishing heel turn.

After winning Elimination Chamber for a WrestleMania 41 shot at Rhodes' title, Cena greeted Rhodes in the ring and hung around to await the champion's answer to The Rock's proposal.

When Rhodes emphatically told The Rock to "go f--k yourself," Cena initially appeared jubilant and even gave the champ a hug.

However, with Rhodes' back turned to him, The Rock gave Cena a signal to take out his new foe. Cena, who just may have sold his own soul to The Rock in hopes of being his champion, then made a vicious heel turn, beating Rhodes in the ring.

A vicious assault ensued, with The Rock even getting shots on Rhodes while Cena and rapper Travis Scott, who accompanied The Rock to the ring, holding Rhodes down. The Rock took off his own belt and beat Rhodes with it after Cena previously wrapped a Rolex watch around his fist and punched his enemy down.

And with that, the Road to WrestleMania took a sinister turn.

Cena was slated to speak with the media after everything went down, but he walked up to the podium and did a mic drop before walking off without saying a word.

On last week's episode of SmackDown, The Rock made an appearance after giving only one day of notice. He announced that WrestleMania 42 will be held in New Orleans next year, but he also had ulterior motives.

The Rock called Rhodes to the ring and proceeded to lay out his vision for The American Nightmare.

After crediting Rhodes with being the face of WWE and for carrying the company over the past year, The Rock alluded to his own status as a member of TKO's board of directors.

The Rock played up his Final Boss character and made clear to Cody that it was more than just a gimmick, as he legitimately has decision-making power in WWE.

Eventually, The Rock cut to the chase, saying, "I want you to be my champion."

When Cody questioned if The Rock was lobbying for a title shot, The Rock insisted that he didn't want the championship, saying instead that he wanted Rhodes' soul.

Essentially, The Rock was seemingly trying to express that he wanted a champion in his own vision who he could mold and guide, and he gave Rhodes the choice of whether he wanted to serve in that role.

Cody struggled to come up with an answer on the spot, so The Rock compromised by giving him until Elimination Chamber to make up his mind.

When faced with The Rock once again in Toronto, Rhodes made his decision by insisting that he will not do The Rock's bidding moving forward.

Rhodes may have followed his heart and chosen to align himself with the fans, but with that, he now has a pair of enemies in both The Rock and Cena, who made their displeasure for the champion's decision abundantly clear.
