Jets GM Mougey Denies Giving Aaron Rodgers 'Ultimatum' to Return to Team After Rumors
New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey denied the reports that Aaron Rodgers was given specific guidelines he had to follow if he wanted to return to the team next season, such as no longer making weekly appearances on The Pat McAfee Show and appearing at all of training camp.
"There was never an ultimatum or rules of engagement for Aaron to potentially join the Jets again," he told reporters on Tuesday at the NFL Scouting Combine. "That never happened. [Head coach] Aaron Glenn and I had a lot of dialogue, a lot of conversations, a lot of good thoughts, and just felt at the end of the day it was the best thing for the Jets moving forward to go in a different direction at the quarterback position."

Jaguars' Hypothetical Alvin Kamara Trade Offer
Whatever the specific reasons for Rodgers and the Jets divorcing this offseason, it felt inevitable.
For one, Rodgers wasn't bad in 2024, throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while taking 40 sacks, but he wasn't great either. At points during the season, he very much looked like a 41-year-old whose career was on its last legs, and New York's offense was hardly efficient, ranking 24th in yards (310.3 YPG) and 25th in scoring (19.9 PPG).
It's clear that the Jets needed some sort of cultural reset after last season's 5-12 calamity, which resulted in a new general manager and a new head coach. Going a different direction at quarterback—especially when the quarterback was a fairly controversial figure like Rodgers—was the next natural step in that process.
It also made sense financially. Assuming the Jets release Rodgers with a post-June 1 designation, they'll still be on the hook for $14 million in dead cap this season and $35 million in dead cap in 2026.
It would have been far worse had they kept him, however. Rodgers would have been owed a $35 million option bonus by the start of the 2025 season had they retained him, and his dead cap hit would have been a whopping $63 million in 2026 given the void years on his contract.
Whether the Jets replace Rodgers via free agency or the NFL draft remains to be seen. But as Glenn and Mougey attempt to put their own stamp on the Jets, starting over at quarterback felt like a natural starting point.
