Report: Hubert Davis, UNC Agreed to Contract Extension Through 2030 Before Season

UNC men's basketball head coach Hubert Davis agreed last July to a contract extension through the 2029-30 season, according to Brian Murphy of WRAL.

Davis' previous contract ran through the 2027-28 season, per Murphy.

The extension was signed in December. The deal bumped Davis' base pay from $400,000 to $1.25 million, according to Murphy.

The new contract, which runs through the 2029-30 campaign, will give Davis $1.7 million in supplemental compensation this year, Murphy reported.

That number will increase by $100,000 each year he is employed by UNC, per Murphy.

Murphy noted that UNC will owe Davis his base salary through 2030 even if he is fired by the team before the expiration of the deal.

The Tar Heels won the ACC regular-season title and made it to the Sweet 16 last season. Davis holds a 96-42 overall record as UNC's head coach.

After making it to the Final Four in Davis' first season with the team, UNC missed out on the NCAA tournament in 2022 and declined an NIT invite in 2024.

The Tar Heels are now in danger of missing another NCAA tournament, as they're approach the final stretch of the regular season as a bubble team. UNC has struggled against top teams this season, and the latest Bracketology by ESPN's Joe Lunardi has them projected as the first team out of the tournament.

The news comes shortly after 247 Sports' Sherrell McMillan reported UNC was hiring sports agency founder Jim Tanner as general manager for the men's basketball program.

Davis previously said earlier this month (h/t Rodd Baxley of the Fayetteville Observer) that UNC needed to hire a GM because "the old model for Carolina basketball just doesn't work" in the NIL era.

As the Tar Heels look for Tanner to help the program build winning teams going forward, Davis' focus for now will be on making the NCAA tournament. UNC has helped its case for a bid with four straight wins, most recently defeating Florida State on the road Monday.
