Mets Rumors: Jose Iglesias Still 'Not a Fit' After Nick Madrigal's Shoulder Injury

Andrew PetersFeb 24, 2025

Even with Nick Madrigal suffering a fracture in his left shoulder that is set to leave him "out for a long time," the New York Mets don't plan to revisit Jose Iglesias as an infield option.

Per Newsday's Tim Healey, the Mets still view Iglesias as “not a fit” for their 2025 roster.

Iglesias had a solid season with New York last year, hitting four home runs and 26 RBI with a .337 batting average in 85 appearances. Despite decent numbers, the Mets have opted to not re-sign him this offseason.

Madrigal, a late offseason signing who can play shortstop, was a candidate to land one of the Mets' spots on the bench. He signed a split deal with New York, meaning he could be sent down to the minors and give the Mets more flexibility, something Iglesias couldn't offer on a major league deal.

“Having some flexibility there in that role is, frankly, probably needed for us right now,” president of baseball David Stearns said, per Healey.

With Iglesias likely not an option, Healey noted that Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty or Donovan Walton could serve as replacements for Madrigal.

Acuña, brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr., was traded to the Mets in 2023 from the Texas Rangers. The shortstop appeared in 14 games last year, hitting three home runs and six RBI with a .308 batting average.

Baty, who has been with the Mets organization since 2019, played 50 games last year, collecting four home runs, 16 RBI and a .229 batting average. The left-handed hitter primarily plays third base.

The Mets signed Walton to a minor league deal in November. The veteran second baseman spent the 2024 season with the San Francisco Giants, appearing in nine games.

New York is coming off an 89-73 season that saw it advance to the NLCS for the first time since the Mets' World Series run in 2025. They made an offseason splash by signing Juan Soto and later re-signing Pete Alonso, but they're now looking to sort out the rest of the roster before Opening Day.
