NFL GM Predicts Aaron Rodgers Contract with Rams, Matthew Stafford Trade to Giants

Adam WellsFeb 22, 2025

One NFL general manager has a unique idea to solve the quarterback dilemmas for the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants that involves Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers.

Per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, the GM predicted a scenario in which the Rams trade Stafford to the Giants and Rodgers signs with Los Angeles as a free agent to give Sean McVay a starter for the 2025 season.

The first part of that scenario isn’t totally farfetched. There have already been rumblings that the Giants are interested in pursuing Stafford if the Rams make him available.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said on Friday’s episode of The Rich Eisen Show that the Rams have given Stafford’s agent permission to speak with other teams, though the “priority” is for Stafford to remain in Los Angeles (starts at 1:45 mark).

If Stafford’s contract situation gets to a point where the Rams don’t feel like they can work out a deal, trading him and bringing in Rodgers wouldn’t be a bad alternative. McVay’s system is very quarterback-friendly, minimizing the amount of work Rodgers would have to do to operate it.

The cost to sign Rodgers also figures to be very low since the New York Jets will take on a $49 million cap hit when they officially release him. In a similar situation last offseason, Russell Wilson signed for the veteran minimum of $1.2 million to join the Pittsburgh Steelers after being released by the Denver Broncos.

There’s a very real possibility this would be a downgrade at quarterback for the Rams. Stafford ranked 12th out of 32 qualified quarterbacks in QBR last season; Rodgers was 25th. This would be a bet on McVay and a more friendly offensive environment than he had in New York lifting Rodgers up,

It’s not a terrible bet, but one that would carry significant risk for a Rams team coming off a very promising 2024. They won the NFC West and played a tough game against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional Round before falling 28-22.
