C.J. Gardner-Johnson: Please Stop Comparing Eagles, Cowboys After Super Bowl 59

Timothy RappFeb 18, 2025

The Dallas Cowboys haven't reached the NFC Championship Game, let alone the Super Bowl, since the 1995 NFL season. They've won exactly five playoff games over that stretch.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have played in eight NFC Championship Games, four Super Bowls and won two titles since 2000. In the last three postseasons alone, the Eagles have won six playoff games.

So when FS1's Emmanuel Acho said that the Cowboys were "one Eagles offseason away from the Super Bowl," Philly safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson wasn't having it:

"That sounds easy," former NFL running back LeSean McCoy said sarcastically in response to Acho's comments. "Sounds simple."

While both the Eagles and Cowboys generally draft well, the Eagles tend to sign their ascending young stars to contract extensions before those deals expire and often load them with void years to avoid prohibitive cap hits. That's where they differ from the Cowboys.

Under Jerry Jones, the Cowboys generally wait to sign their top players until the last minute, meaning they are responding to an already-inflated market rather than getting out in front of it. The extensions for both Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb are prime examples of that.

The Eagles have also shown the tendency to both unearth gems on the bargain bin (see: Zack Baun) in free agency and aren't afraid to make aggressive moves when they sense a championship window or market inefficiency (see: Saquon Barkley).

On the other hand, the Cowboys haven't been particularly adept at doing either in recent years, most notably abstaining from a Derrick Henry pursuit last offseason. So while the Cowboys have a talented core, Jones' front office hasn't proven in the past it could make the sort of complementary moves needed to build a true champion. Believing that will suddenly change requires quite the leap of faith.
