Kotsay has served as the A's skipper since 2022. While they finished with a losing record in all three seasons of his tenure, their 69 wins in 2024 were the most in a year under the 49-year-old.
The Athletics are also coming off a strong finish, owning a record of 39-37 from the month of July through the end of the 2024 regular season.
Despite the team's struggles throughout his time with the organization, Kotsay confirmed his long-term commitment to the A's in Dec. 2024.
“I’ve always said that I want to see this through,” Kotsay said, per MLB.com's Martin Gallegos. “I want to win with this group. … Right now, the focus is on going from 69 wins [in 2024] to a total that gets us competing through the last game of the season and have a chance to go to the postseason.”
There's reason to believe that the Athletics could build upon the end of their 2024 campaign, as they've been much more active during the offseason compared to past years.
They signed veteran starter Luis Severino to a three-year, $67 million deal on Dec. 5. The A's also added infielder Gio Urshela on a one-year contract worth $2.15 million and traded for left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Spriggs.
On Jan. 6, they handed All-Star designated hitter Brent Rooker a five-year, $60 million contract extension.
