Alex Cora: Red Sox 'Still Trying to Improve the Roster' After Alex Bregman Contract
The Boston Red Sox aren't ready to rule out further additions ahead of the 2025 MLB season.
The Red Sox made their biggest splash of the offseason on Wednesday when they signed free-agent infielder Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal. While this added a much-needed right-handed bat to the lineup, manager Alex Cora said the team hasn't turned the page on the offseason just yet.
“So far, we’ve done a good job. We haven’t stopped, though," Cora said, per Jared Schwartz of the New York Post. "We aren’t done yet, we’re still trying to improve the roster which is the most important thing. I think the guys in the clubhouse, they understand that.”
The Red Sox offseason had already been busy, with the team signing starting pitchers Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval, relievers Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson and traded for Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet.
However, Bregman is the first big-name position player to join the roster and should be a welcome addition to the lefty-heavy lineup. He is a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion who will slot in to the middle of the order. He hit .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs in 2024 for the Houston Astros.
He has played the majority of his career at third base but could slot into the second base role in Boston due to the presence of Rafael Devers at the hot corner.
However, adding another right-handed bat and some more bullpen depth could be at the forefront of the team's front office. Boston has not reached the postseason since 2021 and went 81-81 in 2024.
