There are a number of strong candidates competing with Flagg for the award. Johni Broome is the best player on an Auburn team that's been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll for four consecutive weeks.
Broome also has the statistical argument to back up his case because he ranks seventh in the nation in rebounding (10.7) and blocks (2.7), while averaging a career-high 18.1 points per game.
Flagg could get the advantage over Broome if the race is close between the two thanks to Duke's 84-78 victory against Auburn at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Dec. 4.
PJ Haggerty is having a dominant season for a Memphis team that's been excellent. The third-year guard is one of eight Division I players averaging at least 20 points and five rebounds per game. He's shooting 50.4 percent overall and 43.6 percent from three-point range.
The Tigers are 21-4 and have climbed to No. 14 in the AP poll after starting the season unranked.
If Flagg were to win the award, he would be the third freshman to do so since 2012. The others were Anthony Davis (2012) and Zion Williamson (2019).
