The Red Sox can roll out a formidable lineup with Bregman now in tow:
The addition will likely end any pursuit of St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado.
It's unclear how much money is part of Bregman's contract, though before the signing the Red Sox were looking at a payroll of around $158.4 million, per Spotrac, 13th in baseball. That number will be going up, though the deferred money will determine by how much.
Regardless, it's a good day for the Red Sox, who have added a player capable of handling the defensive duties at either second or third base and one who has hit 20 or more homers in five of his nine seasons.
Last year, he batted .260 with 26 dingers, 75 RBI, 79 runs and a .768 OPS in 145 games. It was a bit of a down year by his own standards, but he's still a major upgrade for Boston's lineup.
Just as importantly, Bregman's signing should help appease a fanbase that had grown weary of an ownership group and front office that had cut ties with some of the organization's biggest stars in recent years, including Mookie Betts.
It remains to be seen if the Red Sox are positioned to keep pace with the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles in the loaded AL East, but Bregman's addition will aid those efforts.
