Report: Suns Re-Sign Knight to Five-Year Deal
Wednesday, July 1
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported Knight's extension with the Suns is worth five years, $70 million.
The move to retain Knight after acquiring him in a deadline trade last season ensures the Suns will continue having a strong presence from the University of Kentucky on the roster. Knight is part of a contingent that features fellow floor general Eric Bledsoe and Archie Goodwin.
Recent lottery draft pick Devin Booker also hails from the Wildcats powerhouse and expressed comfort at the idea of joining several notable players from his college program, per the Lexington Herald-Leader:
Drew Franklin of Kentucky Sports Radio referred to that dynamic in his analysis:
Stability and continuity are key, and there's been considerable change in Phoenix in the past two seasons under a new regime. Knight is evidently someone general manager Ryan McDonough trusts to carry the franchise forward and help it into the playoffs in a loaded Western Conference.
Although he struggled to 35.7 percent shooting in 11 games for the Suns last season, the 23-year-old Knight can take solace in the fact that his future will reportedly be secured soon enough. Now he'll have a full camp to properly acclimate to his new team.
After trading promising point guards in Goran Dragic and Isaiah Thomas, Phoenix seems to be showing a strong dedication to Knight and Bledsoe. Those two will still have to figure out how to coexist, which they didn't do too well in 2014-15, though Knight's ankle injury inhibited their ability to develop chemistry.
