Cameron Payne to Thunder: Twitter Reacts as PG Is Selected in 2015 NBA Draft
The Oklahoma City Thunder don't have a ton of holes to fill in their roster this season. In the 2015 draft, they addressed one of their few issues by selecting Cameron Payne with the 14th pick.
Payne averaged 18.5 points and 5.7 games over two years at Murray State. D'Angelo Russell and Emmanuel Mudiay were almost universally regarded as the top two point guards in the draft, but Payne made a strong case to be considered No. 3.
He isn't a great shooter, but his shooting percentage jumped from .404 in 2013-14 to .456 in 2014-15. His three-point percentage also rose 36 points during the two years.
Consider ESPN's Dana O'Neil a fan of the pick:
Payne really blossomed in his sophomore season, putting up 20.2 points and six assists a night. ESPN Stats & Info put those numbers into perspective:
The 20-year-old doesn't appear to be lacking in confidence, per Darnell Mayberry of the Oklahoman:
In the early stages of the draft process, Payne looked to be a potential late first-rounder. Then, his stock continued to rise, and the lottery looked like a strong possibility. According to Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix, Payne was never getting past the Thunder:
Payne obviously won't be starting for OKC in the foreseeable future. Unless Russell Westbrook leaves town after the 2016-17 season, he'll be exclusively used as a backup.
That's not necessarily a bad thing for the player or the team. Payne can have play a valuable role on an NBA title contender, and Oklahoma City gets somebody who will provide depth at the point for years to come.
