Rajon Rondo and Kings Reportedly Agree to 1-Year Contract
Rajon Rondo's unceremonious exit from the Dallas Mavericks after the postseason came at a bad time, but the Sacramento Kings are one team that won't be deterred by Rondo's sullied reputation. Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports reported Rondo has agreed to sign a one-year, $10 million deal with the Kings.
Spears reported Rondo had a good meeting with Kings executive Vlade Divac earlier in the day. After Sacramento missed out on Wes Matthews, per NBA.com's David Aldridge, Jason Jones of the Sacramento Bee reported the Kings turned their attention to Rondo.
On July 1, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported the Kings cleared cap space to pursue Rondo further by sending Jason Thompson, Carl Landry and Nik Stauskas to the 76ers.
Wojnarowski notes in the same report the Kings are "pursuing trade scenarios for everyone on the roster," with Gay a more likely candidate to be moved than DeMarcus Cousins.
Rondo wore out his welcome in Dallas after being acquired in a trade from the Boston Celtics. Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com reported after the Mavericks lost to the Houston Rockets in the playoffs, in which Rondo was inactive for the last three games, that the two sides came up with a back issue to save face.
At 29, Rondo does have time to become a top-tier point guard again. He averaged 10.8 assists per game with Boston last year before being dealt, so the right system can help him reach those heights again so he can get a big contract in two years.
While the Kings do have a plethora of guards, none of them can approach Rondo's talent level. He's the best facilitator in the game, and having him on the roster will only help the development of young big men DeMarcus Cousins and Willie Cauley-Stein.
