American Ninja Warrior 2015 Results: Recap from June 22 Episode
NBC's American Ninja Warrior took its particular brand of challenging obstacles and broadly appealing excitement to Orlando, Florida, for the fourth of six qualifiers, this after airing earlier stops in Venice Beach, California; Kansas City, Missouri, and Houston, Texas.
The season's fourth episode course featured six obstacles, including a rolling log, swinging tires, double-tilt ladders (essentially the most sinister set of monkey bars ever) and of course, the warped wall.
The two main competitors of the night were Drew Drechsel and masked man Flip Rodriguez, both looking to make up for disappointing falls in Miami last year. Both Drechsel and Rodriguez got their wish Monday, topping the warped wall and finishing among the leaders at Universal Orlando Resort.

Rodriguez shocked the crowd by taking off his trademark mask at the beginning of his dominant run. Ninja Warrior provided a look at the moment and Rodriguez's reasoning behind the dramatic change:
His rival Drechsel delighted the crowd with a backflip on the warped wall before hitting the buzzer, via Ninja Warrior:
Mary Beth Wang was an early inspiration, first of the night to reach the fifth obstacle, those dreaded canted ladders. Her run saw her flung off the rolling log and slammed into the pads with extreme force, an example of how that particular obstacle favors those with longer limbs.
This GIF sums up how more than a few nights ended on American Ninja Warrior in Orlando:
Chad Hohn, aka "The Ninja Builder," was the first competitor of the night to top the warped wall. He did this despite banging his head on the rolling log and opening up a deep gash on his forehead. Hohn mopped up blood with his shirt the rest of the way, but he was undeterred and earned the sweet satisfaction of hitting that buzzer.
But when you train over fire, as this ANW screencap shows, the pressure to perform at the qualifier might not seem so bad:
An inspiring run from Hunter Sipes saw him join Hohn as one of the first televised participants to top the warped wall, and pro wakeboarder Shaun Murray made it look easy with his excellent run.
One of the best runs of the night came from Stephen France, who made it all the way to the swinging tires, despite having a prosthetic left lower leg. France displayed incredible determination, strength and balance in holding onto the rolling log and navigating his way across the paddle board.
American Ninja Warrior can tend to favor shorter, more compact competitors on some courses. At 6'6", rookie Jon Alexis Jr. dispelled the notion that taller competitors can't make an impact. He made his qualifying look rather effortless with a time of one minute, 37 seconds, the fastest run of the night. Ninja Warrior showed his excitement at the top of the wall:
His father, Jon Alexis Sr., wouldn't join him at the top of the leaderboard, as he fell hard on the paddle boards. Six-year ANW veteran Travis Rosen dominated the course, as one would expect from one of the few to make it to Stage 4 at Mt. Midoriyama.
There was a large Brazilian contingent in the crowd to watch a pair of brothers, Alexio and Lucas Gomes, take on the Orlando course. Alexio went first and completed the course, but Lucas didn't join him in hitting the buzzer, falling on the paddle boards.
Doctor Rich Shoemaker was one of the 25 competitors to complete the course. While times are tallied and rivalries develop, he told Philly.com's Kelly O'Shea that the show has a healthy underlying competitive spirit: "It was such a unique competitive atmosphere. It’s not us against one and other, it's us against the course. By the time you leave you feel like your brothers with some of these guys."
Orlando certainly has a packed competitive field for its city finals despite the difficult, dizzying course. Season 7 of American Ninja Warrior has two more cities to hit this season in Pittsburgh and San Pedro, California. After the qualifying runs and city finals, the top ninjas will compete in Las Vegas for a grand prize of $1 million.
