Warriors vs. Cavaliers: Game 6 Score and Twitter Reaction from 2015 NBA Finals

Matt FitzgeraldJun 16, 2015

The Golden State Warriors won the 2015 NBA Finals on Tuesday with a 105-97 road victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 6 at Quicken Loans Arena.

A shorthanded Cavs squad was no match for the Warriors when they began to assert their will. As was the case in the prior two contests, Cleveland kept it close for a while only to see Golden State pull away late.

Draymond Green, who had a rather quiet start to the series, notched a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to go with three steals and a block. GSW Stats noted where the achievement put Green in the record book:

Andre Iguodala matched Stephen Curry to lead the new NBA champions with 25 points and played tremendous defense, as he often does.

Grantland's Zach Lowe offered his take on the unlikely heroes in Golden State's closeout triumph:

Iguodala didn't start a single game all season before being inserted into the lineup and rising to the occasion on the biggest stage. For his efforts, Iguodala was named the Finals MVP, per NBA on TNT:

Sam Carchidi of theย Philadelphia Inquirer logged some of what Iguodala had to say upon receiving the award:

It seemed inevitable that the Warriors would hoist the Larry O'Brien Trophy on their opponents' home court. They jumped out to a 28-15 lead after one quarter as Cleveland turned it over nine times.

Determined not to go quietly, the gritty Cavs managed to cut the deficit to 45-43 by halftime, but their thin rotation ran out of gas toward the end, trailing 73-61 entering the final 12 minutes.

CBSSports.com's Matt Moore opted to praise Golden State's defense rather than point out the lack of options Cavs superstar LeBron James had to turn to in his supporting cast:

There is something to that, too. The Warriors didn't even need their reigning NBA MVP in Curry to have a spectacular performance, nor his backcourt mate Klay Thompson to sink more than two field goals to seize firm control of Game 6.

Cavs head coach David Blatt decided not to let Golden State's small lineup dictate what he did, opting to deploy Timofey Mozgov often. Although Mozgov had 17 points and 12 rebounds in 33 minutes and Tristan Thompson added 15 points and 13 boards, that frontcourt production was offset by the Warriors' all-around superiority.

Blatt described how he felt after the game, per Fox Sports Ohio'sย Sam Amico:ย "I'm proud of everybody in our organization. Not every story has a happy ending. Doesn't mean it's a bad story."

Festus Ezeli came off the Golden State bench to snag three offensive boards and put in 10 points, including the following dunk to keep the visitors' momentum going:

Amico emphasized why it was hard to fathom the Cavs erasing a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter:

And the Associated Press' Tom Withers reacted to J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert failing to show up for Cleveland when it needed them most:

Cavs fans had some hope in the fourth when James stole a pass and dunked at the other end to cut the lead to seven, per the NBA's official Twitter account:

Once those authoritative two points were secured by The King, the following tweet from Los Angeles Clippers guard Austin Rivers seemed fitting:

But then the Warriors got a couple of key three-pointers from Curry, who heated up in the fourth quarter after doing the same in Game 5, when he scored 17 of his 37.

Then Golden State's lead ballooned to 15 points and Cleveland.com's Joe Vardon alluded to the ominous sign it was for the Cavs to be in that type of hole:

Smith did drain three late three-pointers to inflate his final total to 19 and shrink the Warriors' lead to as little as 101-97. It just wasn't enough.

Bleacher Report's Jared Zwerling provided a fitting summary of how the Warriors weathered a long season to emerge with the NBA's top prize:

Most will remember these Finals for how extraordinary James was in making the series competitive. ESPN Insider's Tom Haberstroh logged James' stupendous stats from the Finals:

James was without Kyrie Irving from overtime in Game 1 after having lost another All-Star in Kevin Love at the beginning of the postseason. His supporting cast played well as the Cavs won the East, yet it wasn't enough to finish with a championship.

"It's a lot of talent sitting in suits," said James, per CBS Sports NBA. "We ran out of talent," James added, per Marcus Thompson of the Bay Area News Group.

James commented on losing the series, per NBA on ESPN, ย "I've been on the short end of this four times... It's no great feeling when you lose."ย

However, James also came off proud and determined, per Chris Haynes of the Plain Dealer,ย "We put this franchise back into being a contender, but we still have a lot of work to do."

Lakers point guard Jeremy Lin praised James' play afterward:

The Warriors were indeed deserving champions. Head coach Steve Kerr did a magnificent job in his first season at the helm, per Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press:

Even in a loaded Western Conference, they ran away with the No. 1 playoff seed by a whopping 11 games. Golden State faced some adversity in the playoffs, but ultimately were just as good in the postseason as the first 82.

As long as the wait has been for Cleveland to bring home a major professional sports title, these Warriors have been without an NBA championship for 40 years. Oakland will get a victory parade with a young team that's now been thoroughly tested and could be on the cusp of a dynasty.

Cleveland can take solace in the fact that Irving will be around for the foreseeable future, and Love will be hard-pressed to find a better place to win the NBA Finals if he opts out to explore free-agent options.

The pain of seeing Golden State celebrate in the Q should only fuel James' desire to lead these Cavs next season and ultimately deliver that long-awaited championship.ย
