Throwback Thursday: 16-Year-Old LeBron James Talks About His Future in the NBA

Katie RichcreekJun 11, 2015

Fourteen years ago, Kirk Herbstreit sat down with a 16-year-old kid who had just led his Ohio high school basketball team to its second consecutive state title.

That kid was LeBron James.

The very well-spoken high school sophomore told Herbstreit about his NBA dreams—and his goal to be the best.

Well, 16-year-old LeBron, rest assured.

No matter what side of the debate you fall on regarding his legacy, teenage LeBron should be proud.

Perhaps the most striking part about the interview was not the foreshadowing of his future, but the answer he gave when Herbstreit asked how he avoided complacency and what pushed him to get better.

"Every day you gotta go out there and work, because there's someone out there working too," LeBron said. "And if you stop, I think they can pass you up."

As for college football, baby LeBron wanted no part of it—not even with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Sorry, Kirk.
