Jon Lester Sets MLB Record by Starting Career 0-for-58 at the Plate
The Chicago Cubs' Jon Lester may be one of the best pitchers in baseball, but his swing could use some work.
In the second inning of Wednesday's game against the Washington Nationals, Lester found himself entering the MLB record books for an unwanted reason. His flyout to deep center put him at 0-for-58 at the plate in 10 seasons, the most at-bats any player has ever gone without getting a hit to start a career.
Lester's strikeout in his second at-bat of the night tied him with Joey Hamilton for the most plate appearances (66) without a hit to start a career, per Wall Street Journal Sports.

Lester, of course, spent his first nine seasons in the American League. Interleague play was the only time he ever had to bat. In his first year in the National League, he has gone 0-for-23.
It was a tough day overall for Lester. The southpaw took the loss despite allowing just two runs (one earned) in seven innings of work.
