Victorino Placed on Disabled List
Sunday, May 24
The Red Sox confirmed they placed Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain and called up infielder Jeff Bianchi to the active roster in a corresponding move.
It's a big loss for the Red Sox if Victorino's injury indeed develops into a nagging one, as manager John Farrell told Ryan Hannable of WEEI:
Victorino, 34, has hit .255 with a home run, three stolen bases and three RBI in 20 games this season. He struggled with injuries a year ago as well, appearing in just 30 games, so his injury woes this season are certainly not a good sign, especially since he was such a vital part of the team's 2013 title run and is one of the club's better hitters against left-handed pitchers.
While Boston has the depth to make up for Victorino's absence, it's clear the club is better off with him in the lineup. Indeed, he was hitting .421 since being activated off the disabled list on May 11 before this latest setback, per Gordon Edes of ESPN.
Now, the Red Sox will be hoping he can recover fully from this calf injury and help them compete for a postseason berth.
