Holliday Returns vs. Indians
Thursday, May 14
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Holliday will be the designated hitter for the Cardinals against the Indians on Thursday afternoon. Goold reported that manager Mike Matheny planned to leave him out of the lineup but opted to put him in after a strong workout Thursday morning.
Holliday was struck by Indians starter Corey Kluber on the first pitch of his at-bat in the first inning Wednesday night. He initially stayed in the game but was replaced by Pete Kozma in the second inning.
Though he's yet to ratchet up his power numbers, Holliday is off to a red-hot start, batting .346/.466/.495 with three home runs and 21 RBI. The Cardinals mainstay is currently fourth in the National League in batting average and first in on-base percentage.
Holliday's offensive brilliance has helped St. Louis open a five-game lead in the NL Central despite losing ace Adam Wainwright for the season.
