El Torito's Rumored Alliance with the Lucha Dragons Would Be Big Mistake
El Torito, despite being a phenomenal athlete, would be an anchor tied to The Lucha Dragons' ankles.
As the rising tag team looks to establish itself with WWE fans, it needs to be a part of engaging stories and great matches that can develop both Sin Cara and Kalisto's characters. Adding a little person in a bull costume is not on that list.Ā
Having El Torito be the third member of The Lucha Dragons would gut the squad's credibility. It's an odd combination that is sure to sink the luchadores rather than elevate them. Even so, officials are reportedly mulling that option over.
According toĀ The Bryan and Vinny Show on F4WOnline.com (h/t PWMania), WWE is considering having El Torito break away from Los Matadores to join The Lucha Dragons.
That proposal needs to be shot down now. Let it be one of those crumpled pieces of paper in the wastebasket and nothing else.
The Lucha Dragons are potentially a top babyface team. They infuse exciting offense and a marketable look to stand out in a thin tag team division.
Adding a small, flying bull to the mix instantly turns them into a comedy team.
While Kalisto and Sin Cara are clearly a family-friendly pair, they can still appeal to older fans thanks to their athletic prowess. WWE can still portray them as underdogs we want to pull for, warriors brimming with heart.
With El ToritoĀ by their side, they look more like jokes.Ā
We're not supposed to take Los Matadores seriously. They are cartoon bullfighters with a cartoon mascot. WWE presents El Torito like a rodeo clown who tumbles around the ring in search of laughs. That gives his team a slapstick vibe.
The Lucha Dragons can't be looking forward to being crammed into silly segments like the one celebrating CincoĀ de Mayo from last year:
That has limited them thus far. WWE struggles to find suitable rivals for them and so often has nothing for them to do other than take on whoever is working alongside Hornswoggle.
Try to recount all of the big feuds Fernando and Diego have been a part of since donning their pink masks and having El Torito in their corner. Go ahead and count up the duo's runs as tag champs or when WWE gave them a two-on-two opportunity on a pay-per-view.
It won't take long. The tally for all those accomplishments is zero.
Considering how ineffective Los Matadores' run has been, why would anyone think that moving El Torito to another pair of wrestlers would be a boon?
It's not as if all the "interspecies" matches they have been a part of have pushed them up the ladder.
If anything, El Torito has overshadowed the bullfighters.Ā It was the miniature bull who had the WeeLC match, not his masked allies.Ā El Torito often gets the key comedy spot in a match. The announcers more often focus on him than Los Matadores themselves.
That dynamic certainly won't help The Lucha Dragons.
And just howĀ ill-fitting the partnership is makes things worse. As little sense as it makes for bullfighters to have befriended a bull, there's no logical connection between El Torito and the luchadores.
Sin Cara and Kalisto are supposed to be warriors who honor the tradition of Mexican wrestling. They become something sillier with El Torito at their side. They become Los Matadores 2.0.
That's a transformation that must be avoided.
