2015 Undrafted Free Agents: La'el Collins Rumors and Projections for Top Names

Chris RolingMay 5, 2015

After one of the most entertaining offseasons in history, now the globe watches as one of the more curious sets of NFL undrafted free agency unfolds.

It wasn't enough to watch as Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly blew up an NFL franchise like he's playing Madden and even revive Tebowmania. It wasn't enough to watch as suits at a podium announced 256 names in Chicago.

Now undrafted free agency keeps things kicking with a wild class ripe with spillover talent—even after 256 selections couldn't take all the recognizable names in what many hailed as the deepest class in years.

Latest La'el Collins Rumblings

LSU offensive tackle La'el Collins was one of the 2015 draft's top prospects before his name surfaced in a police investigation in Baton Rouge, according to Fox8Live.com.

Collins fell out of the draft and into the realm of undrafted free agency before meeting with police Monday.

It appears things are heating up concerning his NFL status. ESPN's Adam Schefter shares an aggressive move on the part of one franchise:

Expect to hear about more moves like this.

Like it or not, Collins is a first-round talent, and his situation tests the limits of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement. It will be quite interesting to see just what sort of contract he receives and from which team, because the Buffalo Bills and Rex Ryan won't be the only team interested.

Of course, they do make a ton of sense. Buffalo's line surrendered 39 sacks last year, and the franchise didn't have a first-round pick in the 2015 draft—landing Collins anyway would be huge.

Regardless, keep an eye on the situation. It's just getting started.

Projections for Top UDFA Names

Antwan Goodley, WR, Baylor

Former Baylor Bears wideout Antwan Goodley joins the Dallas Cowboys after going undrafted, and there he stands a real chance to make an impact as a rookie starter.

While not the biggest name in the draft by any means, Goodley's versatile skill set fits well in Dallas, where he can act as a kick returner and depth in the base offense. FoxSports.com's Peter Schrager shares how Goodley may fit:

20146083013.86
201371133918.913

Goodley was quite productive in Baylor's spread-it-around attack over the course of his past two seasons.

It's safe to presume Goodley fell out of the draft both because of its immense depth and his potential struggles with route running and catching the ball at a consistent clip. At the NFL Scouting Combine, he came in at 5'10" and 209 pounds.

There's great upside with Goodley if the Cowboys are patient. They should be because the rest of the depth chart, featuring names on the back end such as Devin Street and Reggie Dunn, isn't so exciting. Look for Goodley to stick on the 53-man roster as a returner while he develops.

Prediction: Goodley makes Dallas' final 53-man roster.

Cody Prewitt, FS, Mississippi

Remember Cody Prewitt?

All right, maybe not since this was one of the weakest safety classes in a long time. Regardless, the Tennessee Titans might have a major steal on their hands with the Ole Miss product.

Few SEC All American players fall into the realm of undrafted free agency, but here's Prewitt. Riley Blevins of The Clarion-Ledger reported the news.

NFL.com's Lance Zierlein provides a bit of insight into Prewitt's outlook while grading him as a high as a third-round prospect:

"

Prewitt is a four-year starter who has been a dependable and productive member of an improving unit at Ole Miss. His size screams "box safety" but his play demeanor doesn't. He lacks the athleticism and plus instincts to be a chance-taker at the next level and will likely have to fit with teams as a single-high and Cover 2 safety.

"

Prewitt's fit in Tennessee makes perfect sense, and whoever helped him make the decision deserves a bonus.

All three Titans safeties who played enough snaps last year ranked in horrific fashion compared to the rest of the league at Pro Football Focus: Bernard Pollard (36), George Wilson (82), Michael Griffin (83). The list graded 87 players.

The Ole Miss product shouldn't have any issue sticking on the final roster, if not seeing plenty of action in the base defense.

Prediction: Prewitt makes Tennessee's final 53-man roster.
