James Jones Released by Raiders: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction
A year after adding him to make Derek Carr's rookie transition easier, the Oakland Raiders are moving on from receiver James Jones. The Raiders announced his release on Tuesday.
The veteran wideout confirmed Sunday the Raiders informed him of his impending release, per CSN reporter Fallon Smith. The Raiders have yet to officially announce the move.
Jones, 31, made 73 receptions for 666 yards and six touchdowns last season. He led the Raiders in two of those three categories, trailing only Andre Holmes in yards. Oakland will save $3.43 million off of its cap in 2015, per Spotrac; Jones' three-year, $10 million deal did not call for any dead money in the second or third seasons.
Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times noted Jones' release is the latest failure in a series of stopgap solutions:
His release comes less than a week after the Raiders added Alabama receiver Amari Cooper with the No. 4 overall selection in the 2015 draft. Cooper is likely to step into the starting lineup instantly, where he'll potentially be paired with Holmes or offseason signee Michael Crabtree.
"[Cooper] was on our board high from the start. It didn't matter about the position; it was about the player," Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie said, per The Associated Press and Bill Williamson of ESPN.com.
With Cooper in place to take over top billing and Crabtree added from across the bay, Jones' possession-first skill set created a bit of a redundancy. Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle noted the move may be beneficial for both sides:
Jones should nonetheless find a solid market of teams looking to add a veteran piece on the cheap. Jones had the 12th-lowest drop rate among receivers in 2014, per Pro Football Focus, and he has made at least 59 catches in each of the last three seasons.
Odds are he won't be out of work long.
