The Rays passed along word of the roster move while stating that fellow outfielder Joey Butler will replace Jennings on the active roster:
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times previously reported Jennings was expected to return Saturday before becoming a late scratch. He provided comments from manager Kevin Cash about the decision to remove him from the lineup.
"It was 100 percent my decision to take (Jennings) out," Cash said. "I just didn't feel comfortable. I didn't think it was fair to him to go to try to fight through something. We've been patient with it. He's busted it to try to get back. It might've been rushing it a little bit, hopeful of him being back sooner."
Now the Rays have decided to place him on the DL with hope he can get back to full strength.
Jennings struggled throughout the first month of the season. The 28-year-old left fielder hit just .222 with a .306 on-base percentage in 18 games. He also had just one extra-base hit.
When healthy, he's usually a far more dangerous weapon for the Rays. Giving him a chance to completely recover should help him get back toward his usual level of production.
