A.J. Cann to the Jacksonville Jaguars: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown
With their third-round pick and the 67th overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars focused again on offense, taking guard A.J. Cann. Cann was a leader and a rock at the University of the South Carolina, and I would expect him to do the same for the Jaguars.
Cann was a four-year starter for the Gamecocks, and his week in, week out performance is incredible. He rarely has a bad game, much less a bad drive. His incredible amount of starts and experience puts him on the same level as current starting guard Zane Beadles.
Besides Cann's massive amount of experience and impressive consistency, he's just an all-around great blocker. He was a first team All-SEC selection in 2014, and he's improved each season for the Gamecocks.
Cann excels specifically as a zone blocker, and he will be a big help for the Jaguars and new running back T.J. Yeldon. He's surprisingly athletic and will make blocks around the field when needed as well.

The Jaguars most likely picked Cann because of this reason, but they will also be impressed with his technical ability and his awareness. He recognizes and can pick up on a lot of different moves and is quick to change his actions if the situation warrants it.
However, Cann isn't perfect. He's an average-at-best pass blocker and doesn't always have the best balance, which can be disastrous against tough competition. And at 6'3" and 313 pounds, he's slightly undersized.
Cann has overcome his size issues with incredible athleticism, but there's no guarantee that he will in the NFL. That's a risk worth taking for the Jaguars, however, because his natural athleticism is one of the best in the draft.
The best thing I've read about Cann is from Lance Zierlein's NFL.com analysis, which is a quote from an unnamed NFL offensive line coach: "Nothing about him gets you really excited and nothing about him gets you really down. He's just a steady player and will probably be a nine- or 10-year starter. I'll take that."
A nine-year or 10-year starter? I'll definitely take that; in fact, that's the best thing you can hear about a third-round selection. If the coach is right, the Jaguars found themselves a tremendous value.
Value is another reason why this is a really smart pick. Many thought Cann was the best guard in the draft, and the fact that he slipped to the third round must have surprised the Jaguars.
General manager Dave Caldwell made the most of the opportunity and took Cann, and you can't fault him for taking a guy who could be considered high second-round talent after he fell to the Jaguars.
Cann has a lot of potential and with his experience, he has a pretty good foundation as well. I think Cann will start Week 1 for the Jaguars, despite current guard Beadles' pay and experience.
Cann has a lot to offer as a run-blocker, and as he continues to improve in his pass-blocking, I can see him reaching that 10-year starter level of play. Overall, Cann fills a need, and the Jaguars got a good player for good value here.
Overall Grade: B+
