NFL Draft Trade Rumors

Bleacher Buzz on Browns, Jets and Arik Armstead

To start off with what Bleacher Report insiders are hearing, Jason Cole reports that the Cleveland Browns are keen on maneuvering in the draft, be it for a franchise quarterback or USC's Leonard Williams.

Apparently, Browns general manager Ray Farmer and Co. think highly enough of Williams to sacrifice two potential assets for him. It's one thing to do so for an eventual long-term answer under center; it's quite another to do so for a defensive lineman.

Cleveland had the league's worst run defense last season, and Williams would help out a lot in that regard. The question becomes whether it'd be worth trading such a premium asset away when someone like Washington's Danny Shelton could still be on the board at No. 12 overall.

Bleacher Report draft guru Matt Miller reports that the San Francisco 49ers have their sights set on Oregon defensive lineman Arik Armstead:

Whether they have to move up to get him or wait until the 15th pick to pull the trigger, it seems the Niners know who will be at the top of their board when their time on the clock approaches.

The New York Jets may be prepared to move around as well, according to Cole, potentially trading down from the sixth overall slot:

Cole mentions Colorado State product Garrett Grayson as a potential QB target on Day 2 of the draft and asserts that Stanford offensive tackle Andrus Peat is who the Jets are eying with a first-round pick.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reports Wednesday that New York is leaving no stone unturned:

New GM Mike Maccagnan seems intent on stockpiling assets as a means to round out a deeper Jets roster. There's no denying the team has had a shortage of talent in recent years, but aggressive spending in free agency helped a lot.

Whatever happens in the draft, New York almost certainly appears to be in better hands than it was under Maccagnan's predecessor, John Idzik.

Multiple Teams Interested in Trading for Muhammad Wilkerson

Speaking of the Jets, they have yet to give their dynamic defensive end a long-term extension ahead of the 2015 campaign, which marks a contract year for Muhammad Wilkerson.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter has quite a fascinating pre-draft trade rumor:

Wilkerson hasn't been in attendance for organized team activities, hoping to leverage his way into a fresh deal. The 25-year-old star is eligible for unrestricted free agency next offseason, so the Jets' new regime has serious work to do to get Wilkerson on its side.

CBS Sports' Joel Corry believes trading Wilkerson is a suitable option:

New York invested heavily in its secondary by signing Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine on the open market. If Wilkerson is no longer around, the strategy to beef up the defensive backfield to such a severe degree makes even more sense.

Unlike most other players who may be shopped before the draft, Wilkerson is good enough to net a first- or second-round draft choice. What a potential trade would probably hinge on is for Wilkerson's next team to offer him assurance that it'd commit to him for the long haul.

A top 3-4 defensive end who can function as an effective pass-rusher and is a force against the run is hard to find. That's what Wilkerson is, and the Jets or another fortunate team will pay a steep cost for him eventually.

Texans Place D.J. Swearinger on Trade Block

Rapoport reports that the Houston Texans are shopping starting strong safety D.J. Swearinger ahead of draft day:

Brian T. Smith of the Houston Chronicle passed along what Texans general manager Rick Smith had to say about the rumor:

The misdirection Smith refers to can be designed to throw other teams off the scent of what Houston's draft plan might be.

Even though Swearinger has developed into a strong starter, there's no way he'd net a first-round pick in a potential trade unless more players were involved. Swearinger isn't afraid to take risks and plays a hard-hitting, aggressive brand of football, which may be attractive to some teams.

If the Texans feel good about this draft's depth and that they can net valuable prospects on the second or third days of the draft, then perhaps Swearinger is worth shipping away. On the other hand, he's a low-cost starter on a team that seems to be a decent quarterback away from a deep playoff run.

Browns Trying to Move Up to No. 5 Pick; Vying For Tennessee's No. 2 Pick?

With two first-round selections at Nos. 12 and 19, Farmer is reportedly keen to wheel and deal in the 2015 draft—and has explored other possibilities other than the ones Cole presented earlier.

Rapoport has the details about negotiations Farmer and the Browns front office have had with the Washington Redskins, owners of the fifth pick, and others:

It's commendable that Farmer appears to be exploring all his options in an absolutely critical draft for him to nail. However, he did a fair amount of maneuvering last year to land cornerback Justin Gilbert and QB Johnny Manziel in the first round. They both looked like busts amid lost rookie seasons.

Moving up so high in the draft rather than waiting for two high-quality players to fall to them suggests the Browns really like someone expected to be gone before the 12th pick.

They might be keen on taking Oregon QB Marcus Mariota if he's still on the board. Check out the conflicting reports that emerged on Wednesday from ESPN:

The Browns desperately need help on the defensive front. They could use both of their first-round picks there, which the majority of the fanbase would be fine with.

Hard as it would be to see the trade up for Williams, it may be less disastrous than another ill-fated effort to spend multiple assets on Mariota and see another QB fail in Cleveland.

Farmer must make sure the cost of sacrificing a premium asset is worth whoever he intends to draft higher than No. 12. Another signal-caller like Mariota, who probably needs at least a year to develop, might doom Farmer's tenure, which has been already been quite turbulent.
