NCAA Women's Basketball Championship 2015: UConn vs. Notre Dame Score, Reaction

Scott PolacekApr 7, 2015

Rinse, wash, repeat.

Head coach Geno Auriemma and his Connecticut Huskies won their 10th national title Tuesday with a 63-53 victory over Notre Dame. It was the Huskies' third consecutive championship and further cemented the program and its leader as one of the most dominant forces at any level of sports.

Moriah Jefferson and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis led the way in the scoring department with 15 points apiece, while superstar Breanna Stewart added eight points, four blocks, two steals and a critical 15 rebounds.

Notre Dame actually outrebounded Connecticut, 45-34, so those boards from Stewart went a long way toward staving off any late charges from the Fighting Irish.

The NCAA Women's Basketball's Twitter account and LaChina Robinson of ESPNU discussed Stewart and the rest of the players who made the Final Four All-Tournament team:

ESPN's Kate Fagan had more from Stewart on her overall goal:

Auriemma discussed his team's place in history, per Mechelle Voepel of ESPNW.com:

"

I don't compare our team to any other teams. I just know that in our sport, from 1995 to today, what we've done against our peers is as good, if not better, than what anybody else has done in their sport against their peers.

I'm pretty proud we've done it the way we've done it for as long as we've done it.

"

Nicole Auerbach of USA Today put Tuesday's incredible accomplishment into perspective:

Connecticut got off to a hot start and established a 31-23 lead by halftime. SportsCenter noted that it was something of a moral victory for Notre Dame to even be that close after 20 minutes:

The Huskies seized that initial lead due in part to their strong defense that forced the Fighting Irish into uncharacteristic mistakes, per ESPN Women's Hoops:

Connecticut emerged from the locker room and picked up right where it left off as it stretched the lead to double digits. Charlie Creme of ESPN.com pointed out that the team leader was impacting the game in a number of ways:

Most teams would start to fold against the mighty Huskies if they found themselves down double digits in the second half, but Notre Dame persevered with impressive defense of its own. In fact, the Fighting Irish chipped away at the lead and trimmed it to 48-42 with less than 10 minutes remaining, sparking this observation from Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated:

Notre Dame continued to stay in the game, but it felt somewhat fruitless, as ESPN's Myron Medcalf noted:

Medcalf was right, and Mosqueda-Lewis drilled a difficult, contested jumper to stretch the lead to 61-50 with barely four minutes remaining. It was a back-breaking shot that served as something of a metaphorical finish for the Fighting Irish's comeback efforts.

From there, Connecticut rode the momentum and a few more minutes of stifling defense to a 10-point victory and garnered some recognition from Grantland's Zach Lowe in the process:

Auriemma now has a ring for that second thumb.

And with that third consecutive national title in the books, it is only natural to look ahead to next season.

Kiah Stokes and Mosqueda-Lewis are both seniors, and that's it from this dominant roster. Connecticut will once again be loaded, especially with Stewart leading the way again as a senior. She has been the game's best player for years (hence, the last three titles), and she will have even more championship experience under her belt heading into the 2015-16 campaign.

There is no reason to expect a different result next season. The race for a four-peat starts now.
