Blake Griffin Skies for Absurd, 180-Degree Block on Jonas Jerebko

Dan CarsonMar 30, 2015

Jonas Jerebko did everything right.

He corralled the pass, gave the old gods their due with a pump fake and rose for the bunny. And somehow, after all of this, Blake Griffin was still up there, hovering by the basket like a flying saucer or human chandelier.

The Los Angeles Clippers forward notched one of the most ridiculous blocks in recent memory Sunday after rising to deny Jerebko an easy bucket and putting on a brief ballet performance in the process.

The moment occurred late in the Clippers' 119-106 win over the Celtics. Jerebko caught an outlet pass for what appeared to be a simple, open-and-closed gimme under the basket, only to have Griffin fall from the sky like Nightcrawler and swat his attempt with a spinning, 180-degree block.

The most ridiculous part about all of this is Jerebko saw him coming.

He watched Griffin rise, waited the requisite time a human being should be able to stay airborne and still got caught on the descent. Griffin was just...still up there, thanks to a combination of athleticism and coordination rarely found inside one person.

CBS Sports' James Herbert thinks we've now seen the most strange and impressive block of the NBA season.

"[Griffin] might have pulled off the block of the year against the Boston Celtics on Sunday," Herbert wrote. "It's certainly the weirdest, most difficult to duplicate block of the year."

The block was part of a 21-point, nine-rebound performance for Griffin, who missed 15 games after having surgery to remove staph infection from his elbow in February. He's returned to form quickly and remains a mystifying quantity to behold.

So before you go shooting anything against the Clippers, remember to check the air above you twice for falling Griffins. Best to catch the ball and set an alarm for two minutes before going up with it—just to be safe.

Dan is on Twitter. Somewhere, Blake Griffin is still falling.
