Chris Mullin Reportedly Accepts Position
Monday, March 30
Mullin has accepted the St. John's head coaching job, a source told Roger Rubin and Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.
Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported on March 29 that Mullin had been offered the position at St. John's and was expected to accept.
On March 27, SNY.tv's Adam Zagoria reported that Mullin was on the school's shortlist of candidates.
Mullin has worked in NBA front offices since retiring from the NBA in 2001 and has done broadcasting work for ESPN, but he has not led a college or pro team from the bench. He averaged almost 20 points per game over his four-year Red Storm career, which concluded with them making the Final Four in 1985. Mullin also received the Wooden Award that year.

Dan Hurley Among St. John's Candidates
Friday, March 27
According to Zagoria, an early list of candidates for St. John's includes Dan Hurley and Richard Pitino:
"Former St. John’s and NBA legend Chris Mullin and Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley are expected to be the leading candidates to replace Lavin, sources told SNY.tv. Manhattan coach Steve Masiello, Minnesota coach Richard Pitino and Iona coach Tim Cluess are also possibilities.
"
St. John's athletic director Chris Monasch says, according to Zagoria's report, that the school will conduct a national search "for a candidate who possesses the characteristics to give our program an opportunity to successfully compete at the national level."
Hurley has been coaching Rhode Island for the last three years, building the program from eight wins in 2012-13 to 23 this season, along with an NIT appearance.
It was announced on the school's athletic website Friday that Steve Lavin and St. John's had agreed to part ways after five seasons together. The Red Storm won at least 20 games three times with Lavin as their head coach, making the NCAA tournament twice but never making it past the round of 64.
