Texas Reportedly Fires Barnes
Saturday, March 28
Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com reported Texas athletic director Steve Patterson has fired Barnes.
On March 27, Jerry Meyer of 247 Sports reported that "Multiple sources have told 247Sports that Rick Barnes is not expected to return for an 18th season as the Texas Longhorns head coach. In fact, one source said, 'Bet the house and double down' that Barnes will not return."
Texas AD Pushed for Changes to Staff
Thursday, March 26
Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman and Chuck Carlton of The Dallas Morning News both reported that Longhorns athletic director Steve Patterson gave Barnes an ultimatum: reshuffle your coaching staff or be out of a job.
Texas' season ended last Thursday following a 56-48 loss to the Butler Bulldogs. It was the second time in their last three trips that the Longhorns departed the Big Dance in the second round.
In addition, the team hasn't advanced past the third round since an Elite Eight appearance in 2008.
Although Texas has averaged 22 wins a season since then, the team's lack of success in March has overshadowed what Barnes has accomplished during the regular season.
