Utah vs. Georgetown: Score and Twitter Reaction from March Madness 2015

Timothy RappMar 21, 2015

At this year's NCAA tournament, we've seen players lead their teams to victories with huge individual performances. On Saturday night, however, fifth-seeded Utah put together the consummate team victory, beating No. 4 seed Georgetown, 75-64, in Portland, Oregon.

Five players scored in double digits and six had nine or more points for Utah. The Utes shot an impressive 57.9 percent from the field (8-of-14 from beyond the arc), and the team got to the charity stripe a whopping 32 times, converting 23 free throws.

The Utes' ability to get into the lane and either finish or force a Georgetown foul was the difference. Well, that and their ability to play as a cohesive unit throughout.

As Mike Wise of The Washington Post noted, their team chemistry shone through:

PORTLAND, OR - MARCH 21: Brandon Taylor #11 and Delon Wright #55 of the Utah Utes celebrate their 75 to 64 win over the Georgetown Hoyas during the third round of the 2015 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Moda Center on March 21, 2015 in Portland, Ore

Utah's star man, Delon Wright (12 points, five rebounds, five assists), did a little bit of everything, while Brandon Taylor led the team with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three, and Dallin Bachynski (nine points, eight rebounds) played a key role off the bench.

Jakob Poeltl (12 points), Dakarai Tucker (11 points, five rebounds) and Jordan Loveridge (10 points) also played key roles for the Utes.

Poeltl also had one of the highlights of the game, as noted by NCAA March Madness on Twitter:

L.J. Peak led the Hoyas with 18 points, while Utah held Georgetown's starring pair, D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Joshua Smith, to a combined 20 points. Smith-Rivera also missed all seven of his attempts from three.

That's not how the game started, however, as Georgetown was on fire from beyond the arc, hitting six of its first 10 shots from range. That in part helped the Hoyas race out to an early 23-13 lead. But Utah battled back, and the teams went into the locker room tied at 32 apiece.

Still, the Utes coaching staff challenged the team to come out and improve its play, per Rachel Nichols of Turner Sports:

It seems they indeed took it to heart, going on an 11-4 run to open the second half. The spurt included three straight three-pointers, two of them from Taylor.

But Georgetown wasn't easily dismissed, as it quickly scored the game's next six points. Then Utah answered with six straight. And then the Hoyas scored the next seven, tying the game for the first time since the half at the 8:40 mark, 49-49.

Utah was able to keep Georgetown at arm's length from there, however, as the Utes opened a seven-point lead with 2:47 remaining after Taylor buried a three. They would stretch it to 10 with 1:28 to go after Wright hit one of two free throws, and Georgetown couldn't mount a comeback.

This Utah team certainly seems formidable. As Luke Winn of Sports Illustrated noted, it has all the makings of a team capable of making major noise:

Of course, the Pac-12 has been balling thus far, so Utah had to keep pace. Rivals.com has more on the conference's dominance:

Georgetown, on the other hand, has another disappointing finish to its season, a trend for the team, as noted by Russell Steinberg of SB Nation:

Postseason tournaments have been particularly unkind to the team, per Dan Wolken of USA Today:

For Georgetown, there's always next year.

For Utah, there's Sunday's winner of Duke vs. San Diego State to face next Friday in Houston in the Sweet 16. If the Utes play with as much cohesion and balance as they did against Georgetown, they'll be very tough to beat.
