March Madness 2015 Schedule: TV Info, Live Stream and Sunday's 3rd-Round Picks

Steven CookMar 22, 2015

With eight of the Sweet 16 spots left to be filled, Sunday's action in the 2015 NCAA tournament promises to put a fitting bow on a wild opening weekend.

An upset-filled Thursday that included two No. 3 seeds falling seemed to be a sign of things to come—only, it wasn't. What followed was a nearly all-chalk Friday before No. 11 Dayton notched the day's lone upset, which means a plethora of exciting matchups for Sunday as CBS Sports' Seth Davis noted:

No. 2 Kansas vs. No. 7 Wichita State

The state of Kansas is finally getting the matchup that it has been waiting more than 20 years for.

Well, at least one of the programs playing in Sunday's third-round affair feels that way. After being sidestepped by No. 2 Kansas in nonconference scheduling for more than two decades, No. 7 Wichita State will get the chance to take down the Jayhawks with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.

Head coach Bill Self's squad left no option open for an early exit in a hearty drubbing of No. 15 New Mexico State Friday in Omaha but seeing their in-state foe take care of No. 10 Indiana in the next game unnerved some Jayhawk fans, as the Indianapolis Star's Gregg Doyel noticed:

While reasons beyond simply winning a basketball game went into Kansas not scheduling Wichita State during the season, it's not hard to see why the Jayhawks would be hesitant to face the in-state Shockers. Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet are as solid a one-two backcourt punch as exists still in the tournament, and after an undefeated regular season in 2013-14, Wichita State only has four defeats on the season this time around.

Oh yeah, and the only players on either roster to make a Final Four? They reside on the Shockers, who won their region against the odds in 2013.

Kansas figures to have a decided advantage in the post, but that may not be as big an advantage as one suspected after the Shockers won the paint battle 44-24 against Indiana in the second round. Leading scorer Perry Ellis still hasn't found his footing since returning from injury, while Frank Mason III and Wayne Selden Jr. will have their hands full on the perimeter.

A dominant win over New Mexico State proved the Jayhawks have no plans for an early exit, but the test proposed by Wichita State will be a much tougher one.

No. 4 Louisville vs. No. 5 Northern Iowa

One was taken to the brink of elimination while the other posted a comprehensive performance to avoid such an affair, but the slate is wiped clean for a mouth-watering third-round contest between No. 4 Louisville and No. 5 Northern Iowa.

The Panthers were a trendy upset pick in facing No. 12 Wyoming on Friday, but they proved their worth as this year's Missouri Valley Conference tournament champions with a 71-54 win over the Cowboys that was never really in question in the second half.

As for the Cardinals, they had a much tougher go against UC Irvine and 7'6" center Mamadou N'Diaye in a 67-65 win, having to force a last-second steal to keep the opponent from taking a buzzer-beating look. Louisville may not have the look of its former championship teams, but it survives, per Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv:

The Cardinals rely heavily upon a strong starting lineup that boasts a stingy defense, but they could get worn out by UNI's depth. More than half of the Panthers' 71 points against Wyoming came from the bench, as they outscored the Cowboys' bench a whopping 41-2 on the night.

Northern Iowa's affinity for bleeding the bench can put teams with short rotations in a bind, as it did Friday against Wyoming. Only one Cardinals bench player played more than five minutes on Friday, while four Panthers bench players logged over 20 minutes of game time.

The Cardinals outwork most opponents on the defensive end, but hanging tough on the boards and overcoming fresher legs could put Louisville out in the round of 32.
