Top Stars to Watch
D'Angelo Russell
Guard D'Angelo Russell will be one of the top selections in the 2015 NBA draft if he decides to declare, and he proved why with a sterling performance in Ohio State's round of 64 triumph over VCU Thursday.
The Buckeyes needed overtime to knock off the Rams, but they were in good hands as their fabulous freshman dominated even after suffering a severe cut above his eye.
Russell made history as his 28 points set a freshman record for OSU in the Big Dance, according to SportsCenter:
That scoring output left him among some elite company in the Big Ten as well, per ESPN Stats & Info:
Russell, who averages nearly 20 points, six rebounds and five assists per game at point guard, took on a greater scoring role against VCU, and that proved to be enough for the 10th-seeded Buckeyes to advance.
In addition to attacking the basket, Russell also shot the ball with supreme confidence. He put forth a performance that thoroughly impressed many, including Matt Norlander of CBSSports.com:
Ohio State has a huge test ahead in the round of 32 against second-seeded Arizona. Many believe the Wildcats have the best chance to take down Kentucky, but the Buckeyes won't be easy to get past.
An upset may be somewhat of a long shot, but it isn't out of the question if Russell is dominant once again on Saturday.
Jerian Grant
While Notre Dame point guard Jerian Grant got off to a slow start in the Fighting Irish's round of 64 game against Northeastern, he was ultimately perhaps the biggest reason why Notre Dame was able to avoid a massive upset at the hands of the Huskies.
Grant finished with 17 points, five assists and three rebounds, but his biggest contributions came on the defensive end, as he made a pair of huge steals late in the game to preserve the victory.
He was similarly clutch in Notre Dame's run to the ACC tournament title, and head coach Mike Brey discussed how important it was to have a finisher of Grant's ilk, according to Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune (h/t ND Insider):
"That's where No. 22 is the difference-maker. When you have Jerian at crunch time and in game situations, that's where I think we were all very confident. The year before, we couldn't finish those. We were in a lot of game situations but we didn't have the closer. We've got the closer.
"
By virtue of averaging nearly 17 points, seven assists and three rebounds per game, the senior star is also among the finalists for college basketball's most prestigious individual award, according to Gary Parrish of CBS Sports:
The Fighting Irish may be more explosive offensively than any other team in the tournament, and Grant is the one who orchestrates their attack. He gives the opposition so much to think about that it inevitably makes his teammates better as well.
Notre Dame is viewed as a team that could give Kentucky some trouble if it reaches the Elite Eight, but it must first beat Butler in the round of 32. Irish fans may be a bit worried after nearly getting upset by Northeastern; however, it is tough to imagine Grant allowing his team to bow out early.
Jakob Poeltl

His numbers don't always reflect it, but Utah center Jakob Poeltl is one of the most talented players in college basketball. That talent was on fully display in Utah's triumph over a tough Stephen F. Austin squad in the round of 64.
The 7'0" freshman from Austria dominated in every aspect and showed flashes of being the same player who took college basketball by storm earlier in the season, according to Jon Rothstein of CBSSports.com:
Not only did Poeltl dominate the game offensively with a perfect performance from the field, but he also altered Stephen F. Austin defensively by controlling the paint.
Poeltl looked so good, in fact, that TNT analyst Reggie Miller predicted he would have college basketball fans buzzing Friday morning, per March Madness TV:
Utah is a team that has all the pieces to make a deep run in the tournament despite being only a No. 5 seed. If Poeltl can continue to turn in these types of outings, in addition to what the Utes already get out of guys like Delon Wright, Brandon Taylor and Jordan Loveridge, the sky is the limit.
The Utes have a very intriguing matchup on tap against a solid Georgetown team in the round of 32, and if Poeltl is anything close to what he was against Stephen F. Austin, Utah has to be considered the favorite to move on.
