Dayton vs. Boise State: Score and Twitter Reaction from March Madness 2015

Rob GoldbergMar 18, 2015

Jordan Sibert hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 37 seconds left to give Dayton a 56-55 win over Boise State.

Playing on their home floor, the Flyers faced a seven-point deficit with only a few minutes remaining. However, some hot shooting down the stretch and improved defense helped earn the win while the Broncos fell to 0-7 all-time in the NCAA tournament.

University of Dayton Arena has always been used as the site of the First Four, but this is the first time the home team received an opportunity to play there.

Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight noted the advantage:

Of course, 17 points from Kendall Pollard and 13 from Sibert despite foul trouble were a big part of the win as well.

Boise State saw a big effort from Derrick Marks, who finished the game with 23 points, three assists and three steals. His play during the second half impressed Jeff Borzello of CBS Sports:

James Webb III helped out with eight points and 13 rebounds, but it wasn't enough for the Broncos, who fell just short in the opening-round game.

Things started extremely slowly for Dayton, as the squad seemingly couldn't get any shots to fall in the first half. A key issue was the foul trouble of Sibert, as Seth Davis of CBS Sports described:

The third foul occurred with the Flyers leading 13-10, and Boise State used a 19-4 run to take control of the game.

The Broncos eventually went into halftime up 29-20 thanks to some great defense, which pleased head coach Leon Rice:

The second half started better for Dayton, and it quickly gained the lead with a 10-0 run. This got the fans in red on their feet, as Wally Szczerbiak of CBS Sports pointed out:

That excitement didn't last long, though, as Boise State answered with an 11-0 run.

Still, as most could have expected, the game came down to the final moments. Sports Illustrated explained how the lead dwindled late:

Sibert eventually gave the Flyers the lead with a three-pointer with 37 seconds remaining. Boise State had a chance to regain the lead after two missed Pollard free throws, but Marks misfired on the final shot while trying to draw a foul, and Dayton escaped with a one-point win.

ESPN Stats and Info provided an interesting note for the program:

B.J. Rains of the Idaho Press-Tribune had Rice's thoughts on the final play:

The winning squad had a rare advantage of playing an NCAA tournament game in its home arena, although head coach Archie Miller didn't want to call this an advantage. He explained earlier in the week, via Nicole Auerbach of USA Today:

"

The fact that we're playing in Dayton—I just don't want people to think that this is a cakewalk. I don't want people to think that this is going to be very easy. I have a lot of respect for Boise State. They're a terrific team. ... Regardless of where we would be playing right now, this is a very difficult matchup and that's sort of what you focus on.

"

Despite downplaying the issue, his squad was able to use home court to its advantage as it pulled out the come-from-behind win.

The Flyers will now face No. 6 seed Providence in the round of 64 Friday. The Friars have one of the best two-man combos in the nation in Kris Dunn and LaDontae Henton, but fans shouldn't count out an upset in a tournament where anything can happen.

Dayton proved Wednesday night that it's capable of playing tough basketball against skilled teams, and taking on the Friars will be no different. If Dayton plays like it did Wednesday against Providence on Friday, fans can prepare for another tightly contested game.
