NFL Rumors: Latest Gossip Surrounding Dwayne Bowe, Reggie Bush and More

Sean ODonnellMar 14, 2015

Following a frenzied start to the 2015 free-agency period, the mass signings of lucrative deals have tapered off and teams have begun taking their time to make calculated decisions on any new contracts. Of course, that's not exactly great news for the remaining players on the open market.

Several veterans who should prove to be significant roster upgrades are still available; however, since the activity has slowed down, these players have been making their rounds while looking for a suitor. Some have continued to generate interest while others have seen a decline in intrigue.

As we continue to watch players find new homes for the 2015 NFL season, let's take a look at three prominent names who have been drawing some recent interest.

Dwayne Bowe

Veteran wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was released by the Kansas City Chiefs in a cap-saving move after the team signed Jeremy Maclin. He's had a productive career, and head coach Andy Reid shared his thoughts on the receiver during a press conference, via Adam Teicher of ESPN.com:

"It's been a pleasure working with Dwayne the past two seasons. He showed up every day with a great attitude and did everything we asked of him. He was a productive player for a number of years here, and I have a lot of respect for what he was able to accomplish."

Coming off a season in which he recorded 60 receptions for 754 yards, averaging 12.6 yards per catch, the eight-year veteran showed he's still capable of making a difference in an offense. According to ESPN's Adam Caplan, the team potentially looking to acquire his services is the Cleveland Browns:

Adding Bowe would make plenty of sense for the Browns. The team is absolutely decimated at the position following Josh Gordon's suspension. While Andrew Hawkins is a talented pass-catcher, and Cleveland did bring in Brian Hartline, the Browns still lack a big presence who can win jump balls and act as a threat in the red zone.

Bowe can be those things for Cleveland; however, considering he was slated to make a total of $14 million in 2015, he'll have to come at a discounted price.

Through nine NFL seasons, former college phenom running back Reggie Bush hasn't exactly lived up to expectations. He's a talented ball-carrier with good speed and hands, but he lacks consistency. While he does have two 1,000-yard seasons under his belt, he is coming from a Detroit Lions team that reduced his role last year.

Still, it's not as though Bush doesn't have value. He would be a solid asset to a pass-first team looking for another receiving threat out of the backfield. At first, that team appeared to be the New Orleans Saints—who drafted him in 2006—however, that wasn't the case, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport:

While a deal with New Orleans didn't happen, the Saints' addition of C.J. Spiller may have helped the market for Bush, as he became the best pass-catching back left on the market. As it turned out, the New England Patriots quickly showed interest, via ESPN's Field Yates:

New England appeared to be a solid landing spot for Bush, as the Patriots lost third-down back Shane Vereen to the New York Giants in free agency. Although, Dianna Marie Russini of NBC4 reported the ball-carrier left the Patriots' facility without a deal in place:

While a union with New England hasn't happened yet for Bush, that doesn't mean the Patriots have closed the door on bringing him into the fold. He fills a need, and New England has never really been opposed to adding veteran free-agent running backs in the past.

Stevie Johnson

SANTA CLARA, CA - SEPTEMBER 28: Stevie Johnson #13, Colin Kaepernick #7 and Daniel Kilgore #67 of the San Francisco 49ers celebrates after Johnson caught a touchdown pass against the Philadelphia Eagles during the third quarter at Levi's Stadium on Septe

The San Francisco 49ers released wide receiver Stevie Johnson after just one season with the team. The seven-year veteran caught 35 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns during his short tenure with the team.

Despite his limited production, Johnson began to garner significant interest on the open market. According to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego, the San Diego Chargers were the fist team to bring the receiver in for a visit:

"

The former 49er visited the team facility, his first free-agency visit since San Francisco released him a day earlier. San Diego has a need at the position and been working this week to address it. While Johnson left town unsigned, the visit was considered positive, and he plans to make a decision no later than Monday, a source said.

"

While the visit reportedly went well, the receiver is still unsigned and has another potential suitor, via Russini:

There still hasn't been any reports on a scheduled trip to New England for Johnson, but this is certainly a situation to monitor while the wide receiver mulls over his options.
