San Diego Chargers 2009 NFL Season Preview!

San Diego Chargers last year:

The Chargers finished last season 8-8 and won their division! They beat the Denver Broncos in the last week of the season to win the division. The Chargers had to really dig deep last season. The Chargers were at one point 4-8 in the season, but then they rallied and won 4 straight to take the division title. They also made into the playoffs and made it all the way to the divisional round until losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Chargers had loads of problems last season. Their best defensive player, Shawn Merriman went down with an injury for the entire 2008 season. L.T. was dealing with a toe injury throughout the entire 2008 season, because of the injury L.T. wasn’t himself and wasn’t nearly as good as the 2007 L.T.  L.T’s 2007 numbers dropped tremendously in 2008.(at least to Tomlinson’s standards) He had less yds per carry, less  touchdowns, and less rushing yds total. Tomlinson still had an amazing year last year. He rushed for over 1000 yds and ran for 11 Tds. That’s pretty good numbers for somebody, who was fighting an injury the entire 2008 season.  Antonio Gates had a horrible season. He had his worst season of his career since his rookie season. He only had over 700yds receiving this year.  Gates was fighting a toe injury as well in 2008. Phillip Rivers had another spectacular season in San Diego. He led the entire NFL in passer rating with a rating of 105.5. Rivers also passed for over 4000yds and threw 34Tds and he only threw 11ints.  Besides the injuries that the Chargers faced, the other problem was their defense. Their rush defense wasn’t that bad. They were 11th in the league in defending the run. Their pass defense was the real problem. They were 31st in that category. They were averaging giving up 247.4yds passing per game. In the 2009 season the Chargers look to rebound and have lots of success.

San Diego Chargers in the offseason:

The Chargers didn’t make that many new changes in the offseason. The biggest challenge the Chargers faced was whether they should hold on to Darren Sproles or let him go. The Chargers decided to sign Sproles to a 1 year contract for 6.621 million dollars. They did make a couple other moves to help them in the defense and offense. The chargers drafted 4 defensive players, 2 offensive linemen, and 2 offensive players in the 2009 NFL draft.  They drafted some key defensive players including Kevin Ellison safety, and Larry English defensive end. They also drafted a big wide receiver, Demetrious Byrd. These draft picks could really help the Chargers in 2009. The Chargers will also get Shawn Merriman back from knee surgery and have a healthy L.T. and a healthy Antonio Gates for the 2009 season.

San Diego Chargers in the preseason:

The Chargers looked decent in their first preseason game of the season. They did lose to the Seahawks in the preseason game 20-14, but the Chargers saw some good things in the game that they liked. Tomlinson looked real good. His feet were moving good. He could cut very well. Merriman looked healthy and very quick on his feet.  The Chargers could be a very scary team in 2009.

San Diego Chargers Season preview:

The Chargers could be very dangerous in 2009. They have Merriman back and healthy. They have Tomlinson and Gates back and healthy. They have some great new defensive players. Tomlinson is also looking for a rebound year. He could have another fantastic season. The Chargers have loads of weapons at wide receiver tight end position. The Chargers have Vincent Jackson, Chris Chambers, Malcolm Floyd, the rookie Demetrious Byrd, and tight end Antonio Gates. I believe the Chargers return to form in 2009. The Chargers should get at least 10 wins this year if not more. The Chargers will also win the division and get into the playoffs to do some real damage.
