David Carter Fired as Nevada Head Coach: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Tyler ConwayMar 11, 2015

The University of Nevada relieved head basketball coach David Carter of his duties Wednesday, letting him go within hours of the Wolf Pack's 67-46 loss to UNLV in the Mountain West conference tournament, per the team's official website.

Nevada athletics director David Knuth had more on letting Carter go:

"

"I've made the decision to change the leadership of our men's basketball program," Knuth said. "This was not an easy decision and it did not come without a great deal of careful thought. David Carter is a model coach, mentor and teacher. He believes and supports everything we believe in collegiate athletics. We are grateful for his dedication and commitment to Wolf Pack athletics over the last 16 years, and we wish him and his family well.

"Unfortunately, the program is missing the consistency and level of performance we all expect and it is time for a new direction under a new head coach."

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports first reported the news.

Carter, who turns 48 on Thursday, was in his sixth season at the school. Taking over for current Georgia coach Mark Fox, Carter led Nevada to winning records in two of his first three seasons, including a regular-season conference championship and NIT quarterfinals bid in 2011-12.

Things went south quickly following that season, however. The Wolf Pack have had three straight losing seasons, including a 9-22 mark in 2014-15. They were one of the worst offensive teams in the country, ranking outside the top 300 in points per game, assists per game and field-goal percentage. Ken Pomeroy's offensive efficiency metric had them No. 295 overall.

Carter's firing comes after Nevada shot 28.8 percent in a lifeless thrashing at the hands of UNLV. Nevada finished the season with six losses in its last seven games, including two straight contests failing to reach the 50-point mark.

Carter was 98-97 overall in six seasons. In his three seasons since Nevada joined the Mountain West, Carter led the Wolfpack to a 36-58 record, including a 18-36 record inside the conference.
