ACC Tournament 2015: Latest Championship Odds and Predictions on Day 3

Rob GoldbergMar 12, 2015

While the first two days at the ACC tournament featured plenty of drama, the action is only going to pick up with the top contenders getting started on Day 3.

Virginia, Duke, Notre Dame and Louisville are not only the top four seeds at this event, but each of them has the talent to make a run to the Final Four and beyond in the NCAA tournament. The question is which one can show the consistency necessary to win in the postseason.

All four will get tough battles in the quarterfinals, so here is a look at how each will fare Thursday.

No. 1 Virginia vs. No. 9 Florida State

Florida State earned the win over Clemson behind 30 points from Xavier Rathan-Mayes, but it was far from a clean victory. The squad was up as much as 20 in the second half before falling apart down the stretch and barely hanging on by three.

Even though the Seminoles escaped with the win, Rathan-Mayes wasn't happy:

It will take more than finishing strong to knock off Virginia, however. The Cavaliers have made a habit of shutting down opponents on the offensive end of the court, limiting Florida State to just 41 points when these teams met in late February.

With Justin Anderson still out, the offense has been a bit inconsistent. Still, it is no accident Virginia ranks first in the nation with just 50.3 points allowed per game.

Although this game will likely be ugly, the Cavaliers should be able to come away with the win.

Prediction: Virginia 58, Florida State 53

No. 4 Louisville vs. No. 5 North Carolina

North Carolina and Louisville have played twice this season, and both have been classics. The Tar Heels won the first matchup by one point, while the Cardinals answered back with an overtime win.

While many factors will decide what should be a close game, one big one will be the play of Marcus Paige. The preseason All-American has had a disappointing year, but a lot of that has to do with foot injuries that he has been dealing with lately.

On the plus side, he is apparently getting over this issue:

His all-around ability helped North Carolina play to its potential and blow out Boston College. It will also be necessary to handle the constant pressure from the Louisville defense and avoid turnovers.

With the Cardinals struggling offensively (fewer than 60 points in five of the last six games), North Carolina should be able to pull off the upset.

Prediction: North Carolina 67, Louisville 64

No. 2 Duke vs. No. 7 North Carolina State

This will either be a revenge game for Duke or more of a bad nightmare in the quarterfinals.

North Carolina State beat the Blue Devils by 12 points in January, and the squad has shown over the past few weeks that this wasn't a fluke. The Wolfpack have some of the best wins of anyone in the country, and their backcourt combination of Anthony "Cat" Barber and Trevor Lacey can be deadly.

Alby Oxenreiter of WPXI noted how good this duo was in the second round in Greensboro:

Of course, Duke has some quality guards as well in Quinn Cook and Tyus Jones. Even as teams try to double-team ACC Player of the Year Jahlil Okafor in the low post, these players will make you pay.

Jones especially has shown a unique ability to come through in big games, and this certainly would qualify. Add in the strong play of fellow freshman Justise Winslow, and Duke will remain difficult to defend.

North Carolina State has the ability to keep this game close, but the Blue Devils just have too much firepower to stop.

Prediction: Duke 78, North Carolina State 72

No. 3 Notre Dame vs. No. 6 Miami

This game matters a lot more for Miami than Notre Dame. The Hurricanes are right on the bubble, and all the win over Virginia Tech did was ensure they still have a chance to get an at-large bid.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports notes how close they are:

Still, this win will not be easy to come by. Point guard Angel Rodriguez has been limited with a wrist injury, and the rest of the squad simply lacks the offense to compete with a high-powered team like Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish have been one of the most exciting teams to watch this season with an offense that ranks third in the country in efficiency, according to KenPom.com.

Jerian Grant is as good as anyone in college basketball at both setting up his own shot as well as creating for others, averaging 16.7 points and 6.8 assists per game this year.

With a lineup full of shooters that can spread the floor, Miami will simply not be able to keep up on the scoreboard.

Prediction: Notre Dame 75, Miami 63
