NFL Free Agency 2015: Rumors and Predictions for Top Undecided Players

Steven CookMar 10, 2015

The start of the new NFL season begins Tuesday with the official start of free agency, but the number of notable players whose intentions are still unknown has already dwindled considerably.

In the golden age of social media domination and information overload, news and reports of star players' intentions have been commonplace over the last handful of days. Not many of the moves have been made official just yet, but there also remains plenty of established players and veterans who are making up their minds as the free-agency cycle begins.

Let's focus in on those types of players, as we target a few marquee undecided free agents, break down the latest news surrounding them and take a pick at where they'll end up.

Frank Gore

The question of who would replace LeSean McCoy in the Philadelphia Eagles backfield didn't take long to be answered when ESPN's Adam Schefter and Adam Caplan reported Frank Gore would be filling the void. But the situation got interesting in a heartbeat as Tuesday approached.

The following report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport uncovered the latest on Gore to Philly:

The 31-year-old is coming off one of the more impressive tenures for a running back anywhere over recent history—a 10-year campaign with the San Francisco 49ers that saw the team's return to prominence. He's rushed for over 1,000 yards in eight of his last nine seasons, with the lone exception coming in a season in which he missed five games.

Gore may not be the running back that he once was, but he has still proven to be capable of carrying the load in a backfield. He rushed for a combined 302 yards in his final two appearances with the Niners.

As for his newfound option with the Colts, it's not hard to see the intrigue for Gore in joining forces with Andrew Luck in Indianapolis. It's a passing-dominant offense regardless, and Gore has the skill set to make an impact on fewer carries.

But if Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has carved out a starting role for Gore in Philly, it's hard to see him wavering from taking the opportunity to be a featured back in the Eagles offense. He's doing his due diligence, but Philadelphia is still where he belongs.

Prediction: Gore signs with Philadelphia

Darrelle Revis

Even after proving to be worth every penny of a huge contract last season with the New England Patriots, star cornerback Darrelle Revis is set to hit the market after the Super Bowl champions opted not to take on his huge price tag.

SportsCenter tweeted the report from ESPN's Adam Schefter and Mike Reiss:

Revis eyed New England as a destination where he could chase his first ever Super Bowl ring for the 2014 season, and he did just that as the Patriots topped the Seattle Seahawks in an epic showdown. But the Pats don't view Revis as a one-year wonder, as Rapoport reported that he's still very much in play to re-sign in New England.

One longtime suitor and division rival, however, will have to be edged if New England wants to keep Revis. His former employer, the New York Jets, will be getting in on the action Tuesday morning, as Rapoport noted:

The appeal for Revis in the Big Apple goes without saying. The 29-year-old enjoyed some of his best seasons with the Jets, who need a stud cornerback more than ever with their secondary struggling over the last few seasons.

For a player who has racked up more money than most high-end quarterbacks during his career, it won't come down to salary for Revis, but rather where he can have the best chance to accumulate more rings. Winning never gets old, and Revis will want another taste of a deep playoff run after having the confetti fall on him to end this season.

Not wanting to pay a cornerback $20 million is no indication that the Patriots don't want to keep Revis around. They do, and unless the dollar figures are way off, he'll be returning to New England.

Prediction: Revis re-signs with New England
