Champion: Kentucky Wildcats
Sure, I could have gone with a team like Arkansas or Georgia or LSU. What's the one common denominator between all of those teams? Oh, that's right, each team was beaten by Kentucky.
In four games against those opponents, the Wildcats had a combined margin of victory of 38 points. The closest contest was against the Tigers, who have been up and down all season in the conference.
The 31-0 season puts them on track for the first undefeated season since the 1975-76 Indiana Hoosiers. SEC Network points out just how dominant the Wildcats have been in comparison to the Hoosiers:
Averaging 74.6 points per game and ranking third in points allowed (53.4), Kentucky is blistering through its competition. With emerging superstars in the starting lineup and on the bench, coach John Calipari has one of the most complete rosters he's ever had.
Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports points out Cal's accomplishments this season are a rarity:
Even after pulling out 31 straight wins to start the season, Karl-Anthony Towns isn't excited about what the team has accomplished.
“There’s no nets being cut down because we went 31-0,” Towns said, via Brian Hamilton of Sports Illustrated. “Nets will be cut down when we win championships.”
One season after an unexpected run to the national title game, Kentucky isn't surprising anyone this March. Expect the first set of nets to be cut down when the Wildcats torch through the field en route to an SEC tournament championship.
