Preview

If Saturday night is any indication, college hoops fans are in store for a sensational ACC tournament.
Perceived as a top-seed lock behind undefeated Kentucky, Virginia hit a roadblock in a nail-biter. Mangok Mathiang sank a late-game winner to award Louisville a 59-57 upset, handing Virginia its second loss of the season.
“Mangok was the 64th option,” Louisville head coach Rick Pitino admitted to The Washington Post's Isabelle Khurshudyan after the improbable finish. ESPN Stats & Info explains why the 22-year-old sophomore, who averaged 2.6 points per game this season, was the unlikeliest of heroes:
While Virginia can still salvage a No. 1 allotment, it's now skating on thin ice. Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis detailed a series of events that could strip the Cavaliers of top billing:
Even after the loss, Virginia still places third on KenPom.com's college basketball ratings, fueled by a tenacious defense with the second-best adjusted defensive rating behind Kentucky. Although fans won't love watching its calculated, slow pace, the results have supported the process.
The Cavaliers had won their last nine games, last losing to fellow top-seed candidate Duke. Although pushed to the limit, the Blue Devils survived their latest challenge against North Carolina, which once again gave its enemy a scare.
Duke offers much more offensive firepower behind its soaring freshmen. Guard Tyus Jones notched a season-high 24 points during Saturday night's 84-77 victory, giving him two 20-point outings against Duke's foe.
| Feb. 18 | 22 | 7-16 | 6-7 | 7 | 8 | 1 |
| Mar. 7 | 24 | 5-10 | 12-12 | 6 | 7 | 3 |
Over his last eight games, Jahlil Okafor is shooting an unfathomable 81.7 percent from the floor. Having instant offense in the paint will come in handy, particularly against Virginia or Louisville's ferocious defense.

The storied rivals reside on opposite sides of the bracket, but the Tar Heels can instead set up a great third-round matchup against the Cardinals on Thursday. Both renowned programs worked their way into KenPom.com's top 20 in total team efficiency.
ESPN's Joe Lunardi projects North Carolina to land a No. 5 seed during the NCAA tournament, and its No. 12-ranked RPI and second-toughest strength of schedule, according to ESPN.com, depict Roy Williams' squad as a threat. Yet a 21-10 record, including a 10-point defeat against Louisville on Jan. 31, fall short of the organization's raised bar. Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Notre Dame rounds out the tier of legitimate contenders. The Fighting Irish rank second in college hoops with a 51.0 field-goal percentage, giving them the third-best adjusted offense rating on KenPom.com behind Wisconsin and Duke, respectively.
They hold victories over North Carolina, Duke and Louisville and also lost by six to Virginia in January. Although they lack depth, four of their regulars average at least 12.5 points per game. That strong nucleus would pressure Duke in a potential semifinal showdown.
