However, that would only be a brief occurrence, as the Cardinals continued to carry the lead for most of the second period.
Louisville received a tremendous performance from Montrezl Harrell in what many expected to be his final home game. The junior scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Down by two with 13 seconds to go, Malcolm Brodgon drilled a triple from the right side of the court to hand Virginia a one-point lead.
Mangok Mathiang answered the Virginia guard's basket with a jumper from the top of the key with four seconds to go.
The shot was the first of the night taken by Mathiang, who did not have a major impact in any other stat categories.
The two-pointer was the second basket for Mathiang since January 31. His other field goal came against Florida State two games ago.
On Virginia's final possession, it threw the ball out of bounds before being able to take a potential game-winner.
The loss was the first suffered by the Cavaliers on the road this season. Their other defeat came at home to Duke on January 31.
