Florida vs. Kentucky: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2015 Regular Season

Rob GoldbergMar 7, 2015

Kentucky completed its undefeated regular season Saturday with a 67-50 win over Florida.

The Gators fought hard to stay close for most of the contest, but the Wildcats' overwhelming talent became apparent as they pulled away late. Kami Mattioli of Sporting News joked about the team's dominance this season:

Kentucky became the second team in as many years to finish the regular season with an undefeated record after Wichita State accomplished the feat a year ago. ESPN's Jeff Goodman shared his thoughts on the Wildcats:

The shirts given out to Kentucky's players after the game summed up the program's mindset. Via Matt Stone of The Courier-Journal:

Karl-Anthony Towns was Kentucky's star of the day on both ends of the floor, stuffing the stat sheet with 13 points, nine rebounds, six blocks, three assists and a steal.

His defense at the rim was a deciding factor against Florida, and CBS Sports joked about it:

Trey Lyles also had a strong performance, leading the team with 14 points to go with six rebounds. No other Wildcat finished in double figures in a balanced effort from the nation's No. 1 team.

For the Gators, point guard Kasey Hill came through with one of his better games of the season, scoring 15 points to lead the team. He and junior forward Dorian Finney-Smith combined for 27 of Florida's 50 points, as no other Gator chipped in more than six. The loss means Florida finishes the regular season with a losing record, 15-16, capping a disappointing year.

For most of the game, Florida kept things closer than the final score would otherwise indicate. To start the contest, Kentucky head coach John Calipari decided to honor three players who don't get a lot of attention, via Nicole Auerbach of USA Today:

Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports joked about the Wildcats' ability to dominate this game:

Instead, the Gators went toe-to-toe with Kentucky's full complement of players for much of the first half, even holding a four-point lead with just under six minutes remaining. ESPN's Myron Medcalf gave his impression of Florida's early play:

Kentucky went into halftime with a 30-27 lead, thanks largely to 10 points from Lyles. Mark Story of the Lexington Herald-Leader expressed his admiration for the freshman forward:

Still, the Gators were able to keep the game within striking distance, like many others have done this year:

As CBS Sports' Seth Davis pointed out, Kentucky couldn't pull away at the beginning of the second half, as the road team kept hanging tough:

A big part of Florida's success against Kentucky was Hill's penetration, as the sophomore guard tore apart the Wildcats' perimeter defense.

Auerbach also noted the Gators' outside shooting becoming a factor:

Unfortunately for the underdogs, Kentucky refused to back down. As the second half progressed, the Wildcats' lead expanded to double digits. At this point, Eric Crawford of WDRB discussed the balance of the game:

Forde then called the game with almost six minutes remaining:

He turned out to be correct, as Kentucky continued to pull away and eventually earned a 17-point victory, putting the wrapping on a perfect 31-0 regular season.

Florida head coach Billy Donovan, who is no stranger to top-tier teams, couldn't help but be impressed with what the Wildcats have done this year. He heaped praise on them before the game, via Kyle Tucker of The Courier-Journal:

"

For them to do what they've done is truly remarkable and shouldn't be taken lightly. People want to discredit or discount what happens in the regular season and they want to put all the emphasis on the NCAA Tournament in terms of measuring success all-time. With a team like Kentucky, that's done what they've done, that shouldn't be the case.

"

While 31-0 is a serious accomplishment, Kentucky is still far from finished. The squad will kick off the postseason with the No. 1 seed in the SEC tournament, earning a double-bye until Friday. No matter what happens, it will certainly be looking at a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament as well.

Florida is far from getting a bid to the Big Dance, but the conference tournament could give it a chance to at least get over .500. The Gators don't know exactly who they are playing next, but they will get started in the second round on Thursday.

With the talent on Florida's roster and the players just getting healthy, anything can happen in Nashville.
