Blaine Gabbert Re-Signs with 49ers: Latest Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Timothy RappMar 10, 2015

Quarterback Blaine Gabbert's career has taken more wrong turns than right ones since the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him with the No. 10 pick in the 2011 draft.

But after being traded to the San Francisco 49ers before the 2014 season and spending a year as Colin Kaepernick's backup, Gabbert has apparently decided to reprise his role as a backup on the Niners, re-signing with the team on a two-year, $2 million deal, per ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

The team confirmed the move on Thursday.

Gabbert attempted all of seven passes in 2014, completing three of them for 38 yards and a touchdown.

That came after a rocky three years in Jacksonville that saw him throw for 4,357 yards, 22 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in 28 games while completing just 53.3 percent of his passes.

Gabbert struggled with injuries in his time with the Jaguars as well, and he was eventually replaced by Chad Henne as the starter.

In San Francisco, he's not going to compete with Kaepernick for the starting gig, though perhaps a few years out of the spotlight and fine-tuning the system will make him appealing for a team looking for a veteran quarterback down the line.

Gabbert was deemed talented enough to be a top-10 pick, after all, so he obviously has some tools that perhaps just need to be molded by a new coaching staff—in this case, the new regime in San Francisco.

Is it likely we'll be seeing Gabbert starting in the NFL anytime soon? No, probably not, but for the time being it would appear that he couldn't find a better gig than being the backup in San Francisco.

The Niners were obviously keen on bringing him back to serve as Kaepernick's deputy.

It's an interesting marriage, as Gabbert is a far different player than Kaepernick, but clearly both the player and the team like the fit.
