Teams to Watch
Dayton
One season after gaining national attention for their Cinderella run to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament, the Dayton Flyers are poised to potentially repeat that feat.
While Dayton has certainly experienced plenty or turnover since last season, it has still managed to stay on top in the A-10. According to Nicole Auerbach of USA Today, the Flyers' ability to continue playing at a high level despite facing adversity is hugely impressive:
Much of their success is due to the presence of three returning stars. Guard Jordan Sibert and forward Dyshawn Pierre were both important contributors in 2014, while sophomore forward Kendall Pollard has gone from being an unheralded role player to a key starter.
Per Kevin Goheen of Fox Sports Ohio, Sibert believes that Dayton's success over the past two seasons has moved it out of the Cinderella category even if it continues to raise eyebrows nationally.
"We're a hard-working group," Sibert said. "We take our game serious. We take pride in defending and being a good team. Maybe they're surprised by the depth, but they shouldn't be surprised by the wins because we work hard for them."
Dayton didn't fair particularly well in the A-10 tourney last year, falling to Saint Joseph's in the quarterfinals. Based on the togetherness and winning experience that the Flyers have in 2015, though, it wouldn't be a stretch to label them the favorites.
Davidson
While this is Davidson's first season in the A-10 since making the leap from the Southern Conference, it hasn't taken the Wildcats long to fit in.
Davidson has immediately become one of the elite teams in the Atlantic 10, and much of that can be attributed to longtime coach Bob McKillop. He has led the Wildcats to the NCAA tournament an impressive seven times, including a shocking run to the Elite Eight in 2008 behind Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry.
As pointed out by Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer, McKillop deserves a ton of credit if Davidson ultimately makes the tourney as an at-large bid:
The Wildcats are seemingly in position to do that currently, but it is far from a guarantee. That is why having a strong showing in the Atlantic 10 tournament is so important.
Davidson is one of the most explosive offensive teams in the country with Tyler Kalinoski, Jack Gibbs, Brian Sullivan and Jordan Barham all averaging double figures in points per game.
There may be no deeper team in the A-10 than the Wildcats, which is why they have a legitimate shot at winning the tournament and solidifying their spot in the big dance.
VCU
It can be argued that VCU has been the poster child for Cinderella success in the NCAA tournament over the past several years, and head coach Shaka Smart's squad has a chance to enhance that reputation in 2015.
The Rams have made four consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament, and while they have had their ups and downs this season, they simply know how to win in big moments as a program. After losing in the finals of the 2014 A-10 tournament, perhaps Virginia Commonwealth will get some revenge this time around.
VCU may not be as stacked from a depth perspective as it usually is, but it does boast a legitimate star in senior swingman Treveon Graham. He leads the team in scoring with over 16 points per game, and he is capable of taking over when it matters most.
There may be a bit of extra pressure on the Rams compared to other A-10 teams due to their success in recent years. That never seems to bother them, though, and it shouldn't be much of a factor in the tournament.
Even though many are expecting VCU to win, it will be in for a huge battle due to the number of strong, talented teams in the Atlantic 10 this season.
